Jeff Hardy has described a past addiction to Vicodin and use of Soma during a 2011 match, and he later faced alcohol-related arrests, including a 2022 Florida DUI case. The public record is not one continuous clinical history: Hardy’s recollections, company statements, arrest reports and court records establish different things. The latest sobriety update covered here is Hardy’s own statement in an interview recorded June 24, 2025; it does not verify his status today.
What happened with Jeff Hardy and substance abuse?
The documented timeline spans WWE discipline and Hardy’s retrospective accounts of prescription-drug problems, followed years later by alcohol-related arrests and a Florida DUI case. It is important to keep those strands separate: an arrest or a wrestling company’s policy action is not, by itself, a medical diagnosis or proof of what substance was involved.
What was reported about Hardy’s early WWE years?
2003: WWE release
In a retrospective account, WWE said Hardy’s performance had declined, that he refused rehabilitation, and that the company released him in May 2003. In the same interview, Hardy said he had failed numerous drug tests because he no longer cared about wrestling, and described his attitude partly as a possible way out of the business. WWE’s description of its decision and Hardy’s recollection are not a clinical record. WWE’s retrospective interview
2008: a policy suspension
WWE announced a 60-day suspension for Hardy’s second violation of its Substance Abuse and Drug Testing Policy. The notice did not name a substance or explain the circumstances, so neither can be established from that announcement. WWE’s 2008 announcement

What did Hardy say about Vicodin, Soma and the 2011 Sting match?
Hardy’s account of Vicodin addiction
In a December 2016 interview with CBS Philadelphia, Hardy said his most significant depression was in 2009, when he was addicted to Vicodin. He recalled being arrested after having “way too many,” and said he had been clean for six years at the time of that interview. He described the arrest as a warning that helped him survive: “It’s better to get arrested than to die.” That is Hardy’s retrospective account, not an independently verified treatment history. The 2011 match and treatment
In an interview account published by AS USA in 2017, Hardy said the constant wrestling schedule had contributed to his use of Vicodin and Soma. He said he was taking Soma during his 2011 match with Sting and was too impaired to wrestle properly. Hardy credited Sting’s reaction and support with prompting him to reflect, and said TNA paid for detoxification treatment. He said he returned in 2012 and had been clean since then. These statements are Hardy’s recollections as reported by the outlet, not a clinical file or independently audited treatment record. AS USA’s 2017 account

What happened in the 2018 and 2019 arrests?
ABC News reported that Hardy was arrested for DWI after a March 2018 car crash in Concord, North Carolina, and arrested for public intoxication in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in July 2019. In response to the 2019 episode, WWE said: “Jeff Hardy is responsible for his own personal actions.” These arrest reports document separate events; they do not establish a diagnosis or show that either involved the prescription drugs Hardy had discussed earlier. What happened with Hardy’s 2022 DUI case?
Arrest and reported evidence
WKMG ClickOrlando reported that Hardy was arrested in Volusia County, Florida, on June 13, 2022, on DUI and license-related charges. Its account of the Florida Highway Patrol arrest report described erratic driving and a breath-test result higher than .29, which the outlet said was more than four times Florida’s legal limit. Those details are reported from police records; they should not be confused with a separate clinical finding. The reported charges included a third DUI offense within 10 years and license violations. AEW’s response
On June 14, AEW president Tony Khan said the promotion would help Hardy obtain treatment for substance-abuse issues and suspended him without pay. Khan said a return would depend on successfully completing treatment and maintaining sobriety. That statement set out AEW’s condition for Hardy’s return; it is not, on its own, evidence that treatment was completed. Wrestling Inc.’s report of Khan’s statement
February 2023: court disposition
F4W/Wrestling Observer reported that Hardy entered a written no-contest (nolo contendere) plea to all charges in February 2023. A no-contest plea accepts the court’s disposition without admitting or denying responsibility; it is not a guilty plea. The reported sentence and court conditions were:

In an interview recorded June 24, 2025, and reported by F4W/Wrestling Observer, Hardy said he was “three years [and] two days” sober—more than three years at the time. He called the third DUI the rock bottom in his life. This is the latest dated sobriety statement covered here, and it is Hardy’s self-report; it does not establish his status in October 2026. Quick Recap
How to read the record
- Hardy’s interviews document what he says he experienced, including Vicodin addiction, Soma use, treatment and periods of sobriety.
- WWE and AEW statements document company policy, discipline or stated conditions for employment—not a diagnosis.
- Arrest reporting describes reported allegations and police records; an arrest is not a court finding.
- The 2023 court disposition establishes the reported no-contest plea and sentence, not a guilty plea.
