Jared Padalecki’s May 2023 interview about Walker Season 4 captured his reaction to the show’s renewal and his thoughts on the Season 3 finale—not a preview of the finished fourth season. He also talked about preparing to play Cordell Walker, working in Austin, and contributing to the series as a producer.
What the interview covers
In the May 11, 2023 Nerds & Beyond interview, Padalecki discusses learning that Walker would return, his approach to playing Cordell, and working with cast members including Colin Ford, Matt Barr, and Justin Johnson Cortez. The conversation also touches on the Season 3 finale, the Grey Flag storyline, favorite moments, producing, and what he valued about the series. The publication notes that the interview was edited for clarity.
How Padalecki approaches playing Cordell Walker
Padalecki describes repeatedly reading outlines and script drafts to work out how Cordell would react in a scene. He also contrasts filming Walker in Austin, where he lives with his family, with his earlier experience playing Sam Winchester on Supernatural while working away from home. These are Padalecki’s descriptions of his own process and circumstances.
His work as a producer
Padalecki says his producing role can involve casting, story direction, and continuity. His account offers a first-person view of how he participates in the series beyond acting; it should not be read as a complete description of every producer’s responsibilities on the show.

What he was reacting to: the Season 4 renewal
The CW announced the renewal on May 9, 2023, two days before the interview appeared. The network said Season 4 would consist of 13 episodes for the 2023–24 broadcast season. In its announcement, Padalecki, identified as the show’s star and an executive producer, said: “I’m so excited and grateful to continue the WALKER legacy for another season alongside our partners at CBS Studios and The CW.” The CW’s renewal announcement also described the series as a reimagining of Walker, Texas Ranger: Cordell is a widowed father and Texas Ranger who returns to Austin after two years undercover.
How the Season 3 ending connects to Season 4
The interview’s discussion of the Season 3 finale belongs to the moment it was recorded: the fourth season had been renewed, but had not yet aired. The unresolved Jackal case provided a bridge to the premise The CW later published. In its March 2024 season description, the network said Season 4 begins five months after Season 3 ends. The Jackal returns, while Stella and Sadie face questions after a break-in, and Walker’s family life is also changed by the passage of time. The CW’s Season 4 description lists Anna Fricke as a writer and executive producer and names CBS Studios and Rideback among the production entities.

Interview versus later season information
| Source and date | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Nerds & Beyond interview, May 11, 2023 | Padalecki’s reaction to the renewal, his reflections on Season 3, and his account of acting and producing. |
| The CW renewal announcement, May 9, 2023 | A 13-episode Season 4 order for the 2023–24 broadcast season and Padalecki’s contemporaneous renewal statement. |
| The CW Season 4 description, March 2024 | The later official premise: events begin five months after Season 3, with the Jackal case and family storylines in focus. |
That distinction matters: the interview preserves what Padalecki said as the renewal was announced; the later network description supplies the season’s premise. The CW’s renewal release called Season 3 its most-watched linear show of that season in total viewers, but did not provide a numeric audience figure.
