Jamie Lee Curtis spoke publicly about her daughter Ruby Guest’s coming-out journey in a 2021 AARP profile, with Ruby’s permission. Two years later, Ruby shared her own chronology: she began considering that she might be transgender at around 16, and eventually told her parents by message. The accounts offer distinct perspectives—Curtis’s pride as a parent and Ruby’s first-person recollection—without standing in for every trans person’s experience.
What Jamie Lee Curtis said about Ruby in 2021
In Meg Grant’s AARP profile published July 28, 2021, Curtis discussed Ruby’s identity with her younger child’s permission. Curtis said she and her husband, Christopher Guest, had watched “in wonder and pride” as their child became their daughter Ruby.

The article also described Curtis as shedding the idea that gender is fixed. It presented her outlook as one of “constant metamorphosis”—AARP’s description of Curtis’s perspective, rather than a separate direct quotation from her.
Ruby’s account of realizing she was transgender
In an October 19, 2023 interview with The Advocate, Ruby gave her own retrospective account. She said a high-school friend’s question about her gender prompted her to consider that she might be transgender. “I realized around the age of 16 when a high school friend of mine asked me what my gender was,” she recalled. The age is approximate, as Ruby described it years later; she also said other factors kept her from transitioning at that time.

How Ruby told her parents
Ruby said her wife, who was her girlfriend at the time, encouraged her to tell her parents. During a visit, Ruby did not find an opening to bring it up, so she sent them a message afterward.
Ruby recalled Curtis asking how much thought she had put into it. Curtis then responded, “Well you know, men can wear dresses too.” That line is Ruby’s recollection of the exchange, as told in The Advocate interview.
What Curtis said about the family’s future plans
In the 2021 coverage, Curtis said she planned to officiate Ruby’s wedding the following year. ABC News quoted her saying, “And she and her fiancé will get married next year at a wedding that I will officiate.” This was a future plan stated in 2021; the cited reports do not establish whether the wedding later took place.

Ruby told The Advocate, “I definitely feel more at home in my own skin.” That is her personal reflection, not a prediction about what coming out or transition will feel like for anyone else. She also emphasized that circumstances differ and that safety can matter for someone deciding whether to share their identity.

The accounts are best read for what each speaker chose to share: Curtis described her response as a parent, while Ruby described her own timeline and experience. Neither makes one family’s path a template for another’s.
