Fred C. Trump III’s memoir, All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way, was published by Gallery Books on July 30, 2024. Donald Trump’s nephew presents a personal account of family relationships, money, power, conflict and his effort to become “a different kind of Trump.”

What is Fred Trump III’s memoir?

All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way is Fred C. Trump III’s account of the Trump family and his place within it. Fred is the son of Fred Trump Jr. and the grandson of Fred Trump Sr., making him Donald Trump’s nephew.

The publisher describes the book as including previously untold family stories and examining relationships shaped by wealth, authority and cruelty. It also presents Fred’s efforts to protect his wife, Lisa, and their children while supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Those descriptions are the publisher’s characterization of the memoir. Private conversations and family recollections in the book should be understood as Fred’s perspective rather than independently established findings.

What prompted Fred Trump III to write it?

In a release-day interview with The Washington Post, Fred said he had remained quiet for years and wanted to write “a three-dimensional book. It’s the good, the bad and the jaw-dropping.” He told the paper that an Oval Office conversation concerning his son William prompted him to begin writing.

The Post reported Fred’s account that Donald Trump made a disparaging remark about people with disabilities during that conversation. Fred attributed the statement to his uncle. The same report said Donald Trump stated that he had helped Fred and contributed to a fund for William, but Trump and his spokesman did not directly answer the specific allegation about the remark. Trump told the Post, “I helped him so much, more than anyone else in his life, and this is the thanks I get.”

What family disputes does the memoir discuss?

The estate lawsuit

The Washington Post reported that Fred Trump III and his sister, Mary, sued Donald Trump and two siblings over their grandfather’s estate. They alleged that the defendants had taken advantage of Fred Trump Sr.’s dementia and changed his will. The defendants denied the allegation. The lawsuit later settled under a confidentiality agreement, so the reported claims and denials are not a judicial finding that wrongdoing occurred.

Medical-insurance conflict

The Post also described a dispute over medical insurance for Fred’s son. The memoir places that conflict within the family’s broader disagreements about responsibility, loyalty and access to resources.

Race and a recalled incident

A Post review said Fred recalled Donald Trump using a racial slur after a car was damaged when Fred was a preteen in the early 1970s. The review presents the episode as Fred’s recollection and explains that the memoir considers, but does not simply settle, the question of racism.

Before publication, The Guardian reported the same allegation and quoted Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung calling it “completely fabricated, and total fake news of the highest order,” adding that Trump would never use such language. The allegation and the denial should therefore be kept together; the incident has not been independently established in the available reporting.

How does this account differ from Mary Trump’s memoir?

Fred’s sister Mary L. Trump previously published her own memoir about the family. A Washington Post review characterized Fred’s book as less scathing and more qualified than Mary’s, while still depicting serious disputes and difficult family dynamics. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a claim that one memoir provides a definitive account of the family.

Fred’s book focuses on his own experiences as Fred Trump Jr.’s son, his relationship with Donald Trump, his parents’ history and his responsibilities as a husband and father. Mary’s book reflects a different author, viewpoint and publication context.

What should readers keep in mind?

  • The book is a memoir, so its private scenes and conversations are presented through Fred Trump III’s memory and interpretation.
  • Major disputed episodes have competing accounts: Fred’s allegations, denials from Donald Trump or his spokesperson, and a confidential settlement in the estate case.
  • Coverage from 2024 discussed Donald Trump’s political ambitions during that year’s presidential campaign. Those reports describe the memoir’s release-era context and should not be read as current campaign news.
  • The publisher’s listing confirms the title, author, July 30, 2024 publication date, hardcover ISBN and ebook and audio formats.
