Monty Norman wrote the instrumental and John Barry arranged its familiar orchestral version; film-specific songs have been performed by artists from Shirley Bassey to Billie Eilish. The chart and Oscar records tell different parts of their story.
What is the James Bond Theme?
The recurring instrumental “James Bond Theme” is not the same thing as a film’s vocal title song. Monty Norman wrote the instrumental for Dr. No (1962), and John Barry arranged it for a larger ensemble. The Library of Congress credits Barry with scores for 11 Bond movies and says he also assisted with title-song composition on some films (Library of Congress).
That distinction matters when comparing songs: a film may have its own featured vocal title song, while the recurring instrumental is a separate composition associated with the series. Official Charts’ Bond list includes both kinds of entry, as well as other songs such as “We Have All the Time in the World” (Official Charts).
Who performed the Bond songs?
Across the films, vocal title songs have been recorded by performers with very different styles and careers. Notable examples include Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger,” Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Live and Let Die,” Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does It Better,” Duran Duran’s “A View to a Kill,” Adele’s “Skyfall,” Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” and Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die.”

Songwriting and performance credits are not always identical. Marvin Hamlisch composed the music for Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does It Better,” the title song from The Spy Who Loved Me; the Library of Congress describes the film’s score as disco-influenced and the song as a popular worldwide hit (Library of Congress). Adele co-wrote “Skyfall” with producer Paul Epworth. Sam Smith recorded and co-wrote “Writing’s on the Wall” with Jimmy Napes, according to Sony Pictures’ announcement for Spectre (Sony Pictures).
Which Bond songs reached the top of the UK chart?
On the UK Official Singles Chart, Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” and Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die” both reached No. 1. Duran Duran’s “A View to a Kill” and Adele’s “Skyfall” peaked at No. 2. These are UK chart positions, not worldwide rankings; the Official Charts list gives the song, performer, release year and peak (Official Charts).
“Writing’s on the Wall” was the first Bond song to reach No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, according to Official Charts. The same source reports that “No Time to Die” opened with 90,000 UK chart sales, including 10.6 million streams. Those figures describe its reported opening week in the UK, not an ongoing weekly total or a global sales count (Official Charts).
Why territory changes the comparison
“Goldfinger” illustrates why chart positions should be labeled by country. The Library of Congress reports Shirley Bassey’s recording reached No. 8 on US charts in 1964; Official Charts lists a UK peak of No. 21. Neither rank contradicts the other: each describes a different national chart (Library of Congress; Official Charts).

Which Bond songs won or were nominated for Oscars?
“Live and Let Die” was the first Bond song nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, in 1973. Guinness World Records lists five Bond songs nominated through “No Time to Die”; among those five, “Skyfall,” “Writing’s on the Wall” and “No Time to Die” won (Guinness World Records). The count is scoped to the songs through “No Time to Die,” rather than a claim about any later Bond release.
“Skyfall” was the first Bond title song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song, according to the Library of Congress (Library of Congress). An Oscar nomination or win is a different measure from a chart peak: the awards recognize songwriting, while chart positions reflect performance in a particular market.

“Goldfinger” — Shirley Bassey
Bassey’s recording became a major example of the series’ dramatic vocal title songs. Its US No. 8 and UK No. 21 chart peaks are separate territory-specific results, not competing claims.
“Live and Let Die” — Paul McCartney & Wings
The Library of Congress says producers initially envisioned a female vocalist, and records that a version by B.J. Arnau was recorded and released before the McCartney & Wings recording became a major hit (Library of Congress). The song also holds the Oscar milestone of being the first Bond song nominated for Best Original Song.

“Nobody Does It Better” — Carly Simon
Written for The Spy Who Loved Me, the song’s music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. Its association with a disco-influenced score offers one example of how a Bond film’s musical setting could reflect the era; it should not be treated as a description of every song in the series (Library of Congress).
“Skyfall” — Adele
Adele and Paul Epworth co-wrote the title song. It became the first Bond title song to win the Best Original Song Oscar and peaked at No. 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart.
“Writing’s on the Wall” — Sam Smith
Smith and Jimmy Napes co-wrote the Spectre song, which was the first Bond song to top the UK Official Singles Chart. Sony Pictures’ producers praised it at release, but their description of it as potentially one of the greatest Bond songs was promotional opinion, not an award or chart measurement (Sony Pictures).
“No Time to Die” — Billie Eilish
Eilish’s title song reached No. 1 in the UK, as reported by Official Charts. Its opening-week sales and streams are historical UK chart reporting and should not be read as worldwide totals or a current performance figure (Official Charts).
Quick Recap
How to compare Bond songs accurately
- Identify the kind of music: distinguish the recurring Norman composition and Barry arrangement from a film-specific vocal song.
- Separate writer from performer: a singer’s performance credit does not by itself identify the songwriter or composer.
- Name the chart and territory: a UK peak cannot be substituted for a US position or described as a global ranking.
- Keep chart success and awards distinct: a No. 1 single and an Oscar-winning song represent different achievements.
- Date the scope: Oscar counts or chart reports should retain the release period or historical scope stated by the source.
