There is no public evidence establishing that Bassem Youssef lost a role in Superman because of his comments on Israel and Gaza. Youssef said the timing of a notice about a script change after his October 2023 interview with Piers Morgan looked suspicious. James Gunn later affirmed a report that the character had been removed before that interview and said he had explained the situation to Youssef. The accounts differ in emphasis, and the available reporting does not settle every date or motive.
Was Bassem Youssef officially cast in Superman?
The public accounts support that Youssef auditioned and discussed a potential part, but they do not establish that he received a formal offer. TheWrap reported on February 16, 2024, citing an unnamed person familiar with the project, that Youssef had never officially received an offer. TheWrap’s report also said the character he had taped for was cut from the script.
Youssef described the opportunity differently in his interview with Salon, saying, “I was cast in the movie, ‘Superman,’ and then they told me, ‘We changed the script,’ after this Piers Morgan interview.” That is his account of the experience; the reported lack of a formal offer means “cast” should not be read as proof that he had signed on or been formally hired. TheWrap reproduced his statement.
What did Youssef say about the timing?
Youssef believed the timing of the script-change notice looked bad because he received it after his October 2023 Piers Morgan interview, in which he criticized Israel’s conduct during the war with Hamas. He initially thought the interview may have cost him the opportunity, while also saying he wanted to assume good faith. His suspicion is an interpretation of the sequence, not independent evidence of why the role was dropped. TheWrap’s account of his Salon interview.

In a video posted February 17, Youssef added that he auditioned in June 2023 and spoke with Gunn over Zoom. He said the studio contacted him after the October interview to say the script had changed and he was no longer being considered. He acknowledged that people can lose roles over political positions, but said he hoped the situation was an honest oversight. Just Jared reported his clarification.
What did James Gunn say, and when was the character reportedly removed?
On February 16, 2024, Gunn reposted an IGN report about the character being removed and wrote, “This is accurate.” TheWrap reported that the script material was cut before October 7, 2023, attributing that timing to an unnamed person with knowledge of the project. TheWrap covered Gunn’s response and the reported timeline.

The Independent, citing IGN, reported that Gunn had discussed casting Youssef as politician Rumaan Harjavti and that the character had reportedly been written out by September 2023. That chronology places the reported script change before Youssef’s October interview, but it is secondary reporting, not a dated script or production record. The Independent’s report.
Gunn later said he and Youssef had spoken and were “good,” adding that he understood how Youssef read the timing and had told him the full story. TheWrap reproduced Gunn’s statement.

- Youssef connected the timing of the notice to his interview and said the sequence looked bad.
- Gunn affirmed a report that the character was removed before the interview and later said he had explained matters to Youssef.
- The exact removal, notification, and decision dates are not fully reconciled in the public accounts. The sources cited here do not include the relevant script versions or dated internal production records.
The careful answer to “Was Youssef dropped because of his comments?” is that Youssef suspected a connection, but the available public evidence does not establish that motive. The reported pre-interview script removal supports Gunn’s account of timing, while the difference between a possible casting discussion and a formal offer helps explain why the accounts can sound different without proving that either person’s stated experience is false.
