Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s 2024 fight grew out of an earlier event connection, Paul’s account that he proposed the idea, and a partnership between Netflix and Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP). Announced for July, it was postponed after Tyson became ill and ultimately took place in November as a Texas-approved professional contest under modified rules.
How did Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s fight happen?
Their first documented connection came in 2020, when Paul fought Nate Robinson on the undercard of Tyson’s exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. Netflix later recalled that link in its announcement of the 2024 event. It explains how the two came to share a boxing card, but does not establish that a fight between them was already being planned.
Paul later said he had envisioned facing Tyson about two years before the bout and brought the idea to him. Speaking to the Associated Press in November 2024, Paul described it as his own initiative and account of a private conversation: “I had a vision for this fight about two years ago and I shared it with Mike because I thought the Hall of Famer would understand – and be interested.”
How Netflix and MVP turned the idea into an event
On March 7, 2024, Netflix and MVP announced a partnership to stage the heavyweight fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The original date was July 20. Netflix presented it as a global live boxing event, while MVP promoted the matchup; those promotional roles are distinct from the regulatory approval that determined how the bout would be classified.

The fight was not simply an exhibition billed as a contest. Texas approved it as a professional bout, with a referee and judges, and the result would count on both fighters’ professional records. The Associated Press quoted a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation spokesperson describing it as “an actual competitive fight.”
Was Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson a real professional fight?
Yes: Texas approved the contest as professional, and its result counted on the fighters’ records. But the event used modified terms rather than the standard three-minute rounds commonly associated with professional boxing.
| Feature | Terms for this bout |
|---|---|
| Regulatory classification | Professional contest approved in Texas |
| Rounds | Eight rounds of two minutes each |
| Gloves | 14 ounces |
| Record status | Result counted on both fighters’ professional records |
That combination is why “real or fake?” is an incomplete way to describe the matchup. It was sanctioned as a professional contest, but its shorter rounds and heavier gloves were special conditions for this event—not ordinary professional-round terms.

Why was the fight postponed?
Tyson became ill on a flight and received treatment for a stomach ulcer. The July 20 date was postponed, and the event was rescheduled for November 15, 2024, at AT&T Stadium. The venue stayed the same; the date changed because of Tyson’s health.
What audience did the event draw?
Netflix’s retrospective reported 72,300 attendees at AT&T Stadium and more than 108 million live global viewers. These are Netflix-reported figures; the sources available for this account do not independently audit the audience total.
