Jaden Smith said Jada Pinkett Smith was “the first one to make that step for the family” with psychedelics. Jada’s response was to point readers to her memoir, Worthy, for the full answer—not to provide a detailed contemporaneous confirmation or denial.
Jaden Smith said his mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, was “the first one to make that step for the family” when it came to psychedelics. Jada’s response was not a detailed confirmation or denial: when PEOPLE asked whether she had introduced her son and the family to psychedelics, she directed readers to her memoir, Worthy, for the fuller answer.
The exchange took place after Jaden participated in a question-and-answer session at Psychedelic Science 2023 in Denver, Colorado. The conference ran from June 19 through June 23, 2023; Entertainment Tonight reported Jaden’s comments on June 28, and PEOPLE published Jada’s response on June 29.
What Jaden Smith said about his family and psychedelics
During the conference Q&A, Jaden described the family’s progression as beginning with Jada. He said the experience then spread through the family as individual members encountered psychedelics “in their own ways.”

Jaden also said psychedelic experiences had helped him feel what he described as profound love and empathy for his siblings, Willow Smith and Trey Smith. Those comments were his account of his own experiences and feelings. They were not the findings of a clinical study involving the Smith family, and they do not establish that every member of the family used psychedelics.
In particular, the available reporting does not establish that Jada personally supplied or administered psychedelics, that all of the Smith family used them, or that Will Smith participated. Jaden’s description of the family’s experiences should not be expanded into claims the reporting does not support.
How Jada Pinkett Smith responded
Asked by PEOPLE whether she really introduced Jaden and the family to psychedelics, Jada said the answer would be found in her forthcoming memoir, Worthy. She also said the book would address assumptions and false narratives surrounding her public life.

That wording is important. The contemporaneous report did not include a detailed account from Jada explaining the precise order in which family members may have encountered psychedelics. Nor did it present a clear, detailed denial or confirmation of every part of Jaden’s characterization. Her documented response was to refer readers to the memoir for more context.

Readers looking for the account Jada referenced can find it in Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir Worthy. The book was scheduled for publication on October 17, 2023, and was presented as a memoir about her life, identity, relationships, and self-reclamation. Its relevance here is specific: Jada herself pointed to it when asked for the fuller explanation. The short June 2023 news report should not be treated as a substitute for the memoir or as proof that the book confirms every version of the headline.
What Jada and Jaden had said previously
The 2023 reports also revisited a November 2021 episode of Red Table Talk in which Jada and Jaden discussed psychedelic experiences.
According to the coverage, Jada said she had been introduced to plant medicine roughly a decade earlier. She connected her experience with a long struggle with depression and described the practice in terms of her own personal journey. Jaden said his interest initially came from curiosity and described experiences involving what he called ego dissolution, greater self-understanding, and emotional connection.

- Composition book contains 100 double-sided sheets; A classic favorite for journaling and lab notes
- Wide ruling gives you plenty of writing space for notetaking
- Sewn binding is smooth, helps keep pages securely in place and lays flat when open

These are personal testimonies, not medical conclusions. Jada’s account should not be rewritten to say that psychedelics cured her depression, and Jaden’s description should not be presented as evidence that psychedelics reliably improve family relationships or produce the same effects for everyone.
What the story does—and does not—show
| Supported by the reporting | Not established by the reporting |
|---|---|
| Jaden said Jada was the first family member to take that step. | That Jada administered psychedelics to Jaden or any other relative. |
| Jaden described feelings of love and empathy toward Willow and Trey after his experiences. | That every member of the Smith family used psychedelics. |
| Jada referred readers to Worthy for a fuller response. | That the June 2023 report contained the complete account later associated with the memoir. |
| Jada and Jaden had discussed plant medicine and psychedelic experiences publicly before. | That the family’s experiences prove a medical treatment works or is safe for general use. |
The legal and scientific context
The family’s comments also need to be separated from the broader scientific and legal status of psychedelics. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health identifies psilocybin as a psychedelic substance and notes that its legal status in the United States is evolving. The Food and Drug Administration has granted breakthrough-therapy designations to psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy programs in depression-related research, but a breakthrough designation is not FDA approval and is not proof that unsupervised use is effective or safe.
FDA guidance describes psychedelic-drug research as an emerging area of clinical development and emphasizes the safeguards required in properly conducted clinical investigations. Under federal regulations, psilocybin is listed as a Schedule I substance, although state and local rules can differ and may change.

None of that regulatory or research context changes what Jaden said at the conference. It simply prevents a celebrity account from being mistaken for medical advice or clinical evidence. The Smiths were describing their own experiences with plant medicine and psychedelics—not conducting research on the family and not establishing a general treatment recommendation.

Jaden’s remarks created the headline, but Jada’s answer shifted the focus to a source she said would provide more detail. Worthy was therefore editorially relevant not because the brief exchange proved a complete family history, but because Jada explicitly directed the public to the memoir when asked about the claim.

Jada responded that readers should look to Worthy for her fuller account. Beyond that, the available June 2023 reporting does not justify assumptions about who used psychedelics, how anyone obtained them, or what effects they had on other family members.
