Jackpot! is a 2024 action-comedy built around a deliberately outrageous question: what if winning the lottery made you legally killable? Directed by Paul Feig and starring Awkwafina, John Cena, and Simu Liu, the film follows a newly arrived Los Angeles resident who must survive until sundown after discovering that she holds a winning ticket. Anyone who kills her can claim the jackpot—but the rules prohibit guns, turning the hunt into a chaotic, close-quarters survival game.
What is Jackpot! about?
In the film’s near-future California, a new Grand Lottery has transformed the traditional jackpot into a deadly public contest. The winner does not simply collect the prize. They must remain alive until sundown, while anyone who kills them before the deadline can legally claim the money.
Katie Kim, played by Awkwafina, moves to Los Angeles and accidentally becomes the winning ticket holder. Once the news spreads, she becomes the target of essentially everyone looking for a life-changing payout. She hires Noel Cassidy, an amateur lottery-protection agent played by John Cena, to keep her alive in exchange for a share of the winnings.
Noel is not the only person offering protection. His rival, Louis Lewis—played by Simu Liu—also wants the commission, creating a second source of conflict as Katie tries to make it through the day. The result is less a traditional lottery story than a comic chase movie in which the prizewinner is the person being hunted.

How the fictional lottery works
- The Grand Lottery produces an enormous jackpot.
- The winning ticket holder must survive until sundown.
- Anyone who kills the winner before sundown can legally collect the prize.
- Guns are prohibited, so the action centers on improvised weapons, hand-to-hand fights, stunts, and frantic escapes.
The movie supplies this premise as part of its fictional setting—not as a prediction about California or a description of real lottery law. The background suggests that the lottery emerged after a fictional 2026 depression, in a Los Angeles marked by economic inequality. However, the film gives only a light and sometimes hurried explanation of how this society works. Its social ideas are mainly a framework for the action and comedy rather than a fully developed dystopian system.

Where to watch Jackpot!
Watch Jackpot! on Prime Video was the film’s announced distribution route. Amazon announced its Prime Video premiere for August 15, 2024, positioning it as one of the service’s summer 2024 Original films rather than as a conventional theatrical-first release.
Availability is not necessarily identical in every country, account, or month. The official Prime Video listing has displayed the film’s metadata—including its cast, approximate runtime, and alternate versions with American Sign Language and British Sign Language interpretation—but availability may change. Check the listing in your territory before assuming that the movie is included with a Prime subscription.
For viewers who prefer a transactional option, current United States availability listings have identified Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home as possible rental or purchase services. Prices and storefront availability can change, so use the relevant service’s listing immediately before watching. You can also rent or buy Jackpot! digitally if a subscription option is unavailable in your location.

The film is rated R for violence, sexual references, and pervasive language. Prime Video also flags violence, sexual content, foul language, alcohol use, substance use, tobacco depictions, and flashing lights or strobing patterns. These advisories make the film a poor choice for viewers looking for a family-friendly lottery comedy, even though its premise and presentation are intentionally comic.
What critics said
Critical reception has been mixed to negative, although the numerical ratings can change as additional reviews and audience votes are added. The Rotten Tomatoes figures in the available research listed a 33% Tomatometer score from 79 reviews and a 51% Popcornmeter score from more than 500 ratings. Treat those numbers as a snapshot rather than a permanent assessment.
The main criticism is not the central idea, which is immediately understandable, but the execution. Reviewers have described the screenplay as puerile, the pacing as erratic, and the film as underpowered despite its prominent comedy cast. The Guardian similarly found an uneven combination of stunts, ridiculous characters, and dystopian ideas.
There is still a plausible audience for the movie. Feig’s action-comedy experience, the physical energy of the set pieces, and the pairing of Awkwafina with Cena can work for viewers who want a broad, fast-moving streaming comedy without a complicated plot. The film’s strongest appeal is its high-concept hook and willingness to turn ordinary lottery anxiety into an absurd survival scenario. Its weakest area is the limited development of the world behind that hook.

Is Jackpot! a serious dystopian film?
Only partly. The setting contains genuinely bleak ideas: poverty, economic inequality, a society that normalizes violence for financial gain, and a government-sanctioned mechanism that turns one person’s good fortune into a public manhunt. But the movie treats those ideas through broad action-comedy conventions.
That tonal tension is central to the viewing experience. The premise resembles a survival-game or dystopian thriller at the level of setup, while the finished film emphasizes jokes, exaggerated characters, stunts, and buddy-comedy friction. It is more accurate to describe those similarities as tonal or genre comparisons than to claim that the movie is officially based on another property.

- Expect an action-comedy, not a detailed political satire. The fictional society is sketched to support the chase rather than exhaustively explained.
- Expect broad humor. The rating reflects pervasive language, sexual references, and adult content.
- Expect frequent violence. The no-guns rule does not make the film gentle; it redirects the action toward physical fights and improvised attacks.
- Expect a compact, accessible premise. The central objective—keep Katie alive until sundown—is easy to follow.
- Do not expect a fixed streaming guarantee. Prime Video and digital storefront availability can vary by country and date.
Verdict
Jackpot! is best approached as a knowingly excessive, R-rated survival comedy. Its lottery premise is more inventive than its social worldbuilding, and the cast gives the film enough energy to keep the chase moving even when the script and pacing become uneven. Viewers seeking a polished dystopian drama may find the tone too broad; viewers seeking an uncomplicated streaming action-comedy may find the absurd rules and star pairing sufficient reason to watch.
The short version: the idea is instantly engaging, the cast is appealing, and the execution is inconsistent. Check the current Prime Video or digital-store listing in your region, allow roughly 105 minutes, and expect adult humor, strong language, flashing lights, and comic violence.
