Whether you want a classic whodunit, a gothic investigation, a screen-based missing-person case, or a murder mystery with jokes, Netflix’s mystery selection offers several ways to play detective. The ten films below are arranged by the kind of mystery they deliver—not as an objective ranking—so you can choose the right movie for your mood.

This is a spoiler-light guide: the setups, investigative hooks, and tones are explained, but killers, final reveals, and major reversals are left untouched. Netflix catalogs vary by country and change over time, so verify each title’s availability in your region before settling in.

Classic whodunits and traditional detective stories

1. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Best for: Viewers who want a contemporary detective movie with a famous sleuth, a large suspect ensemble, and an apparently impossible crime.

Benoit Blanc returns for a new case involving a small-town church with a dark history. The setting is a sharp departure from the bright island luxury of Glass Onion, giving this third Blanc mystery a more ominous, traditional atmosphere. Netflix classifies it as a mystery, thriller, comedy, and drama, with Daniel Craig, Josh O’Connor, and Glenn Close among the principal cast.

  • The Ultimate Murder Mystery Party: Hunt a Killer: Death at The Dive Bar is a surefire way to level up game night. This murder mystery game for adults and teens is rated 1/5 difficulty for ages 14+.
  • Outsmart Criminal Minds: This immersive investigation delivers 45-60 minutes of gameplay and can be played in a single sitting. Ideal for beginners, this true detective game keeps everyone on edge.
  • Want More Murder Mysteries? Turn a cold case into "case closed" with more fatal crime stories from Hunt a Killer. These gripping, narrative-driven mystery box games make any mystery party feel epic.

The central case has the shape of an impossible-crime or locked-room mystery, making this the most directly “detective movie” choice on the list. Expect suspect questioning, competing stories, hidden motives, and the pleasure of watching Blanc test what appears to be an airtight version of events. Netflix Tudum describes it as the third Benoit Blanc film and reported that it was streaming on Netflix by December 12, 2025. Availability can still differ by territory.

2. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Best for: Viewers who prefer colorful suspects, social satire, a vacation setting, and a playful modern whodunit.

World-famous detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece, where a technology billionaire gathers an eclectic group of friends for an elaborate getaway. Before long, the vacation becomes a mystery involving money, status, old resentments, and people with plenty to conceal.

Glass Onion is witty, offbeat, darkly comic, and driven by its ensemble. Its sunny island setting and broad social comedy make it a lighter companion to the darker church mystery in Wake Up Dead Man. Choose this one if you want clue construction and detective work without a relentlessly grim mood.

Accessible period mysteries

3. Enola Holmes

Best for: Families, teens, and anyone who wants an energetic period mystery led by an amateur detective.

When Enola Holmes’s mother disappears, Enola sets out to find her while navigating a Victorian world that underestimates her intelligence and independence. Her search also draws her into the problem of a runaway young lord—and into an adventure that places her in the orbit of her more famous brother, Sherlock Holmes.

The film’s appeal is its combination of mystery, momentum, humor, and a strong young-detective perspective. Netflix describes it as witty, exciting, suspenseful, Victorian, and centered on an amateur detective. It offers intrigue without the bleakness or adult intensity of the psychological thrillers elsewhere in this guide.

Hunt A Killer: Lakeside Slaughter - Murder Mystery Game
  • Trouble's Looming: This horror mystery has an extended lakehouse vacation cut short when Ryan discovers his wife Monica dead. Investigate the crime scene and deduce who killed her.

4. Enola Holmes 2

Best for: Viewers who want a more conventional case-solving story after enjoying the first film.

In the sequel, Enola takes on her first official detective case: finding a missing girl. The investigation leads into a wider conspiracy, and Enola needs help from both her friends and Sherlock Holmes. Netflix’s tags highlight the film’s amateur-detective viewpoint, London setting, conspiracy elements, and suspenseful tone.

This is the more case-driven entry of the two. Watch Enola Holmes first if possible: the sequel builds on Enola’s identity, friendships, and relationship with Sherlock, so the emotional and character context carries over even as the mystery changes.

Atmospheric and psychological mysteries

5. The Pale Blue Eye

Best for: Viewers who like slow-burn historical crime mysteries, gothic atmosphere, and deliberate investigation.

A retired detective recruits West Point cadet Edgar Allan Poe to help solve a grisly murder at the U.S. Military Academy. Christian Bale, Harry Melling, and Gillian Anderson lead a cast in a story shaped by its wintry military-academy setting and literary associations.

This is the choice for atmosphere over comic momentum. The investigation unfolds through ominous surroundings, guarded characters, and a measured accumulation of clues. Netflix categorizes the film as a mystery, thriller, period piece, and adaptation. Its gothic mood makes it a particularly good pick for a quiet night when you want the setting to feel almost as important as the crime.

6. The Woman in the Window

Best for: Viewers who enjoy unreliable perception, claustrophobic suspense, and psychological mystery.

A psychologist confined to her home by agoraphobia becomes preoccupied with her neighbors. From her window, she believes she has witnessed a brutal crime—and begins trying to determine what happened.

The film’s central question is simple but powerful: can she trust what she saw? That uncertainty drives the mystery and keeps the investigation tied to the protagonist’s perception rather than to conventional police procedure. Netflix describes it as a psychological, suspenseful mystery thriller based on a book, starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Anthony Mackie.

Choose this when you want a tense, enclosed story rather than a genial ensemble whodunit. It is substantially more psychologically intense than the Enola Holmes films or the Murder Mystery comedies.

Modern investigations and true-crime tension

7. Searching

Best for: Viewers who enjoy missing-person mysteries, digital investigations, and stories told through screens.

After his sixteen-year-old daughter disappears, a father searches through her laptop, social-media accounts, messages, and online history. A detective is also involved, but much of the investigation unfolds through the digital traces the daughter left behind.

Searching uses a screenlife format: instead of following investigators from one physical location to another, the film presents the case through computer interfaces, video calls, search results, and other digital spaces. That structure gives the mystery a distinctly modern investigative hook while keeping the emotional core focused on a parent trying to understand his child.

8. Woman of the Hour

Best for: Viewers looking for the most serious, unsettling, and crime-based film on this list.

Woman of the Hour draws on a disturbing real-life premise involving entertainment culture, suspicion, and danger. Rather than treating murder as a playful puzzle, it focuses on the uncomfortable collision between public performance and the threat of real-world violence.

This is best described as a dark true-crime-inspired investigation and crime drama, not a conventional cozy detective story. Its subject matter makes it substantially heavier than either Enola Holmes film or the two Murder Mystery movies. If you are choosing a film for a light group watch, pick another entry; if you want something serious and unnerving, this is the clearest fit.

The film is included in Netflix’s suspense and drama selections. Because its impact depends partly on the disturbing premise, this guide will not identify the criminal or discuss its later developments.

Easygoing mystery-comedies

9. Murder Mystery

Best for: Viewers who want a breezy holiday whodunit rather than a grim thriller.

A New York City police officer and his hairdresser wife finally take the European trip they have been postponing. Their vacation changes course when they become involved in solving a murder aboard a billionaire’s yacht.

The yacht setting, international travel, and Adam Sandler–Jennifer Aniston pairing give the film an approachable comic tone. It is a murder investigation, but the emphasis is on misunderstandings, celebrity suspects, relationship banter, and escalating holiday chaos rather than sustained dread.

After starting their own detective agency, Nick and Audrey Spitz are drawn into a new case when a billionaire friend is kidnapped at his wedding. The investigation expands beyond the original yacht-bound setup into a larger action-comedy adventure.

Netflix categorizes the sequel as a comedy, mystery, and action-adventure, with Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, and Mark Strong among the principal cast. Watch the first film beforehand for the characters’ relationship and comic history, but expect the sequel to put more emphasis on set pieces and action than on a tightly contained whodunit.

  • Check your country’s catalog: Netflix’s U.S.-oriented title pages and suspense selections do not guarantee identical availability elsewhere.
  • Expect changes: streaming rights can change without notice. Availability statements in this article are time-bounded, not permanent promises.
  • Choose by intensity: Enola Holmes, Enola Holmes 2, and the Murder Mystery films are the lighter options. The Woman in the Window, Searching, The Pale Blue Eye, and especially Woman of the Hour bring more psychological, violent, or emotionally serious material.

Which film should I watch first if I want a Benoit Blanc mystery?

Watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery for a colorful island-set ensemble mystery, or choose Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery for a darker, more traditional impossible-crime case. The films are separate cases, so either can serve as an entry point.
