Jack Jones, the Grammy-winning singer closely associated with the The Love Boat theme, died on October 23, 2024, at age 86. He died in Rancho Mirage, California; his manager, Milt Suchin, said Jones had been treated for leukemia for more than two years, according to the Associated Press.

His birth date is reported inconsistently: the Television Academy lists September 14, 1938, while the Los Angeles Times gives January 14, 1938. Both sources identify Los Angeles as his birthplace, so the conflicting day and month should not be treated as settled. His age at death was reported as 86.
Which songs made Jack Jones famous?
Grammy-winning recordings
Jones won two Grammy Awards for vocal performances on “Lollipops and Roses” and “Wives and Lovers,” the Associated Press reported. Those recordings helped establish him as a leading interpreter of polished pop standards in the 1960s.

The Love Boat theme
Jones became especially identified with the theme to ABC’s The Love Boat. His recording was released as a single in 1979, and it reached No. 37 on Billboard’s U.S. Adult Contemporary chart in 1980, according to the Associated Press. His version was not used across the series’ entire broadcast run: the Washington Post reports that Jones sang the theme from 1977 to 1985, while Dionne Warwick performed it during the final season in 1986. The series ran nine seasons, from 1977 to 1986, the Los Angeles Times reported.
A wider repertoire
Jones also recorded songs including “Love With the Proper Stranger,” “Dear Heart,” “Alfie,” “Girl Talk,” “The Race Is On,” “The Years of My Youth,” “The Impossible Dream,” and “Lady,” according to the Washington Post. He continued performing on stage, including in touring productions of Man of La Mancha, Guys and Dolls, and South Pacific.

How did Jack Jones view his signature song?
Jones understood that the theme had become his calling card, even while judging it modestly as a song. “So it’s not the greatest song in the world,” he once told a reporter, referring to lyrics promising a love that is “exciting and new” and “won’t hurt anymore.” “But I think just about every singer would like to have a song with which they’re identified,” the Washington Post quoted him as saying.
Why has “Wives and Lovers” been reconsidered?
“Wives and Lovers,” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, is framed around a husband’s expectations that his wife prepare herself for his return home. Its gender politics have drawn criticism. The Washington Post reports that Jones later revised the lyrics in performance, changing the song’s language rather than presenting its original message without qualification.
