iTunes Extras still exist in 2026. They are bonus features attached to certain movie purchases—such as deleted scenes, interviews, commentaries, galleries, and behind-the-scenes videos. To qualify, Apple generally requires an eligible HD purchase; rentals and non-qualifying versions do not include them. The movie must display Apple’s iTunes Extras badge, and the extras can be viewed on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV hardware, or Windows PC running iTunes. The Apple TV app on a smart TV or streaming stick may play the movie but does not provide the Extras menu.
What are iTunes Extras?
iTunes Extras are Apple’s digital equivalent of the bonus section on a DVD or Blu-ray. The studio decides what each title contains. Depending on the movie, you may find:
- Deleted, extended, alternate, or behind-the-scenes scenes
- Director, cast, and crew interviews
- Commentary tracks
- Production featurettes and promotional videos
- Photo galleries, artwork, and trailers
- Title-specific interactive material
There is no standard package. An Extras badge confirms that Apple recognizes bonus material for the title, not that it includes every feature from a physical-disc edition or a commentary track.

Are iTunes Extras discontinued?
No. The branding comes from the older iTunes Store, but Apple’s current support documentation still provides instructions for viewing and troubleshooting iTunes Extras. In modern use, you will usually encounter them through the Apple TV app, with iTunes for Windows still documented as a viewing route.

They are separate from Apple TV+. An Apple TV+ subscription does not automatically include bonus features for movies you buy, and you do not need an Apple TV+ subscription simply to purchase an eligible movie and view its Extras.
How to check whether a movie includes Extras
- Open the movie’s description page in the Apple TV app or Apple’s store.
- Confirm that the title is offered for purchase, not only rental.
- Check that an HD version (or a qualifying higher-resolution version) is available.
- Look for the iTunes Extras badge.
- Read the title description for the actual list of bonus material, if Apple provides one.
If the badge is absent, do not infer Extras from the movie’s studio, a Blu-ray listing, an HD label alone, or another retailer’s description. The badge is the most reliable pre-purchase signal.

In short, an HD purchase is a prerequisite for relevant titles, not a guarantee that every HD movie has Extras.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Open the Apple TV app and select Library.
- Choose the purchased movie and start playback.
- Hold the device in landscape orientation if necessary, then tap the screen.
- Tap Extras in the playback controls.
Mac
- Open the Apple TV app and select Library > Movies.
- Open the movie with the Extras badge.
- Use the title page’s Extras option or start playback and select the bonus feature. Placement can vary with the app version.
Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD
- Open the Apple TV app and go to Library.
- Select the purchased movie.
- Open the movie details or playback controls and choose Extras.
An Apple TV 4K box is not the same as the Apple TV app built into a television. Apple lists Apple TV hardware as supported, while smart-TV apps are excluded.

Windows PC
- Open iTunes.
- Choose Movies from the media-type menu, then select Library.
- Find the movie and click its iTunes Extras badge.
Apple’s general Windows purchase documentation also discusses the Apple TV app, but its dedicated Extras instructions continue to identify iTunes for Windows as the supported route.
Smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, console, or other streaming device
There is no normal Extras menu in these environments. Use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV hardware, or Windows PC instead. AirPlay may be useful in some setups, but it does not change Apple’s platform restriction and is not guaranteed to expose every Extras feature.
Why are the Extras missing?
The badge is missing
Check these in order:
- Verify that you are signed in to the Apple Account that bought the movie, or that Family Sharing is configured correctly.
- Confirm that the item is a purchase, not a rental.
- Check whether the purchase is HD and otherwise eligible.
- Open the title’s description page, not just the playback screen.
- Check country or region availability.
- Try a supported device rather than a smart-TV or streaming-device app.
- Update iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, or iTunes for Windows.
The movie plays, but Extras do not
This usually means the current device is unsupported, the item is a rental or non-qualifying purchase, or the title never included Extras. Successful movie playback does not prove that the bonus package is available.

Use a strong internet connection, enable cellular data for the Apple TV app when appropriate, and install the latest software updates. If a qualifying title still fails, use Apple’s iTunes Extras troubleshooting guidance and report a problem with the purchase.

The movie disappeared from your library
Check the Apple Account, hidden purchases, Family Sharing status, and regional availability. Apple says purchased media is generally redownloadable, but rights changes can occasionally make a title unavailable. Its guidance recommends downloading purchased media to a compatible device rather than relying only on future redownloads.
Older purchases made before July 10, 2014
Apple says that, for some movies bought with iTunes Extras before July 10, 2014, an original Extras package may still be downloadable from the iTunes Store on a Mac or PC with iTunes. If available, it can appear as a separate library item rather than as a menu inside the movie. This is an exception and is not a universal recovery method.

Apple generally allows purchased movies to be downloaded to a compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC. Downloading the movie does not necessarily mean that every Extras component is downloaded in the same way, and it does not create an unrestricted video file that works in any media player. Access remains tied to Apple’s software, account, and supported platforms.

Apple purchases, Movies Anywhere, and Fandango at Home
Apple’s store is the direct fit when bonus material matters: verify the badge, buy the eligible HD version, and keep access to a supported Apple device. The trade-off is that the Extras experience is more device-restricted than the movie itself.
Movies Anywhere can connect eligible purchases from participating retailers, including Apple TV and Fandango at Home, for U.S. users who meet its requirements. It can help consolidate the main movie library, but the available documentation does not establish that iTunes Extras transfer between services. Treat the Extras as Apple-specific unless the title and service explicitly say otherwise.
Fandango at Home is a separate digital retailer offering rentals, purchases, sales, bundles, premium formats, and downloads to supported iOS devices. It may be attractive for price shopping, but buying there is not a substitute for Apple’s iTunes Extras package.
Should you buy an Apple TV 4K for Extras?
Apple TV hardware is the strongest living-room option if you already buy Apple movies and want their bonus material on a television. However, do not buy a box solely for one title unless its broader streaming and Apple-ecosystem features also justify it. A smart TV with the Apple TV app does not provide the same Extras capability.
A practical buying checklist
- Does the Apple listing show the iTunes Extras badge?
- Is it a purchase rather than a rental?
- Is the purchase HD or otherwise identified as eligible?
- Will you watch on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV hardware, or Windows iTunes?
- Do you need a downloadable archive, and have you checked what can actually be downloaded?
- Are you relying on Movies Anywhere or another retailer? If so, assume the main movie may transfer but Extras may not.
For collectors, the safest choice is the title that visibly has the badge, is bought in the eligible HD format, and can be tested on a supported device before you depend on its bonus content.
