Spoilers for the IT: Welcome to Derry season finale. Pennywise tells Marge that her future son, Richie Tozier, will help kill him. The revelation helps explain why the planned story moves backward through Derry’s history: the creature does not experience time linearly and may try to change the past. It does not confirm that Pennywise succeeds—or that the films’ ending will change.
What did Pennywise mean by Richie killing him?
The finale reveals that Marge is Richie Tozier’s future mother. Pennywise tells her that Richie and his friends will bring about his death, turning a family connection into a warning: the people who will eventually defeat It are already part of the creature’s awareness.
That is the twist’s clearest meaning, but it is not a scene showing Richie’s future or a newly established mechanism for time travel. The finale connects Marge to Richie and lets Pennywise speak as though he knows what lies ahead; the precise limits of that knowledge remain unexplained.
Is Pennywise aware of the future?
Creator Andy Muschietti describes It as a being that “doesn’t experience time linearly.” In an interview with TheWrap, he said that this different relationship with time is why the series tells its story backward and raises the possibility that It can rewrite history. He connected the idea to an unanswered question in Stephen King’s novel: how It experiences time.

From Pennywise’s perspective, a future death could be experienced almost like a beginning. That makes the creature’s knowledge of Richie narratively plausible within the show’s premise, but the finale does not spell out the rules. It leaves open what Pennywise can perceive, what actions could alter events, and whether an attempted change would work.
What the finale resolves—and what it leaves open
What happens in 1962
The group restores the missing pillar with the dagger and contains Pennywise’s physical form in Derry for another hibernation cycle. That is the immediate resolution of the season’s confrontation: It is restrained, not permanently erased.

What the twist does not prove
The story’s suggestion that Pennywise might rewrite history is a future possibility, not a confirmed successful alteration. As TVLine reports from Muschietti’s comments, the idea changes the stakes of making a prequel while leaving the films’ known outcome in view. The finale does not establish that the creature can prevent its eventual defeat.
Why is Welcome to Derry going backward in time?
The reverse chronology is meant to do more than show earlier incidents of Derry’s history. If Pennywise experiences time differently, telling the story backward creates a way to explore whether It can act on knowledge of its own future. That premise turns the prequel structure into part of the conflict, rather than simply a sequence of historical flashbacks.

Muschietti said the project was conceived around three catastrophic events described in the novel’s interludes: “From the genesis of this project, we had the idea to make it three seasons, aligning with the three more important catastrophic events that are described in the interludes [of the book].” The sequence he has described is 1962, then 1935, then 1908.
What year is Welcome to Derry season 2 set in?
Season 2 is set in 1935, during the Bradley Gang Massacre. GamesRadar’s August 17, 2026 report says HBO announced the season with a teaser placing the story in 1935. The report gives no release date.

Will season 3 be set in 1908?
A 1908 story centered on an Easter egg hunt disaster is part of the creators’ stated three-season blueprint. It is not established in the available reporting as a separately announced season. The distinction matters: the creative plan gives a likely direction, while only the 1935 season has been reported as announced.
