Spoilers for “The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet’s Function.” In Episode 4 of IT: Welcome to Derry, Dick Hallorann learns that the creature is called the Galloo and arrived in a meteorite. He gets the story by entering Taniel’s mind—a violation that brings the episode’s supernatural history into sharp focus while the creature’s threat closes in on the Hanlon family.
Children’s warnings meet adult disbelief
The children bring photographic evidence of the danger to the police, hoping the images will make their warnings harder to dismiss. The adults remain unconvinced. Charlotte tries to help Hank Grogan as the children struggle to make anyone take them seriously, leaving them with evidence but little authority or protection.
The threat reaches Will Hanlon
At the creek, Will is attacked by an apparition resembling his father after a plane crash. Leroy saves him and listens to what happened. Will’s account helps Leroy recognize that the danger is connected to the entity the military is pursuing—and that the threat is no longer confined to the investigation.
Marge’s hallucination turns bodily
Marge experiences a graphic hallucination in which eye-like growths appear on her body. The scene pushes the episode’s horror from frightening visions into physical violation without resolving whether the danger is only in her perception.

Hallorann enters Taniel’s mind
The military detains Taniel, whose inherited knowledge may help locate the creature. Hallorann uses his psychic ability to enter the boy’s mind and extract the story. The episode presents the act as painful and ethically troubling, not as a cost-free investigative shortcut. Chris Chalk, who plays Hallorann, told TheWrap on November 16, 2025: “He hates what he does to Taniel.” Chalk described it as breaking a personal rule.
What is the Galloo?
In Taniel’s ancestral account, the creature is the Galloo, which came to Earth in a meteorite. Taniel and Rose’s people fought it and contained it in the place that would become Derry. The episode connects that history to a practical objective: Hallorann learns that the containing pillars can be located through tunnels leading from the old well. The final image shows the dilapidated house familiar from the films.

The military wants to find the entity and use it, while Taniel’s account describes a history of resisting and containing it. That conflict gives the origin reveal its immediate stakes: learning where the creature is bound could help protect Derry, but the people seeking that knowledge may want to turn the threat into a weapon.

The Galloo story belongs to the television series’ fictional mythology; it should not be treated as a definitive account of Stephen King’s novel or as real Indigenous history. GamesRadar’s comparison describes the series’ origin story as related to King’s novel but altered and expanded. It also notes that the Indigenous lore and Shokopiwah tribe are not in the novel and were created for the film series.
