In the United States, It Ends With Us is rated PG-13 for domestic violence, sexual content and some strong language. For tweens, it is best treated as a cautious parent-preview or co-view choice—not an automatic yes or no. The story centers on an abusive relationship, and classification advice in Australia and Alberta also flags family violence and sexual-violence material. A tween’s maturity and sensitivity matter more than the rating alone.
What the film is about
Sony Pictures describes the 2024 drama-romance as based on Colleen Hoover’s novel. Lily Bloom starts a new life in Boston and pursues her dream of opening a flower shop. Her relationship with Ryle becomes intense, and she recognizes behavior that recalls her dangerous father. With support from friends and allies, she faces the pattern.
That relationship is central to the story; the romance framing does not make the subject light viewing for every child.
What the ratings say about content
Ratings are assigned under different national or regional systems, so their labels are not directly interchangeable. The content notes help explain why a parent might want to preview the film.

| Authority or listing | Rating or advice | Content detail |
|---|---|---|
| Motion Picture Association (United States) | PG-13 | “Rated PG-13 for domestic violence, sexual content and some strong language.” MPA listing |
| Australian Classification Board | M; original film runtime listed as 130 minutes | Consumer advice: “Family violence and references to sexual violence.” The description also notes a teen severely beaten by an adult male, discreet sexual references, language and a verbal reference to suicide. Australian classification record |
| Alberta provincial movie-rating database | PG | Mature subject matter and violence; listed elements include domestic-context hand-to-hand violence, a portrayal of sexual assault, references to suicide and abuse, suggestive scenes, and alcohol and tobacco use. Alberta rating database |
Apple’s US listing also repeats the PG-13 reason and describes the story as a steamy romance that condemns domestic abuse. These summaries offer useful context, but none sets a universal age threshold for every child.
How to decide whether it is right for your tween
The available classifications do not establish a single appropriate age for all tweens. Consider how your child has responded to similar material, especially realistic relationship or family violence, references to sexual violence, and trauma. If those subjects are difficult for them, wait or watch only after previewing the film yourself.

Talking about the film and finding support
The story may prompt a conversation about harmful relationship patterns, safety and asking trusted adults for help. Keep the discussion focused on support rather than treating a film as clinical guidance. Sony’s page says: “If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, visit nomore.org for help and resources.”
