That reading makes the episode’s final exchange with Harper especially painful: Sweetpea comes back bruised and close to tears, yet turns away comfort and tells Harper about Kwabena instead.
What happens to Sweetpea in “Eyes Without a Face”?
Sweetpea Golightly and Kwabena Bannerman travel to Ghana to investigate Tender, a payment-processing startup under scrutiny by their employer, SternTao. Their inquiry uncovers a deceptive operation built on fabricated business claims. The professional investigation then gives way to a personal crisis when Sweetpea is attacked.
She returns to the work rather than letting the assault end the investigation. Petche describes that persistence as part of Sweetpea’s effort to recover control, not evidence that the experience has left her untouched. The episode gives her a professional win, but it does not cancel the harm or its emotional aftermath.
How does Miriam Petche interpret the attack?
Petche describes the attack as a loss of agency, rather than a scene whose purpose is only to shock. In TheWrap’s interview, she said: “That moment isn’t about shock — it’s about this loss of agency, and then everything she does afterwards is her trying to recover a sense of control, and what happens when that lid that she has so tightly screwed on becomes loose.”
That framework helps explain Sweetpea’s sharper, more aggressive behavior afterward. Petche reads it as survival energy: Sweetpea is trying to regain command of herself and the situation. Her response is not a simple return to normal, but an attempt to act when control has been taken from her.

Why is Sweetpea intimate with Kwabena?
Petche interprets Sweetpea’s intimacy with Kwabena as an effort to reconnect with her body on her own terms after feeling disconnected from it. As she told TheWrap: “I saw that as her trying to reconnect with her body on her own terms, after feeling disconnected from it.”
This is Petche’s interpretation of the character’s choice, not a claim that the moment has only one meaning for viewers. Within her reading, the important distinction is that Sweetpea is trying to reclaim a sense of ownership after the attack—not that intimacy resolves what happened.

Why does Sweetpea tell Harper about Kwabena?
The ending brings Sweetpea back drained and bruised. Harper is ready to comfort her, but Sweetpea rejects that offer and tells her about Kwabena. Petche calls the exchange heartbreaking: Sweetpea is visibly close to crying while pressing the feeling down. “Sweetpea is about to cry the whole time, and she’s got it really, really pushed down in the bottom of her belly,” she told TheWrap.
That disclosure can be read as a return to Sweetpea’s familiar self-protection. Rather than let Harper see how badly she is hurting or accept comfort, she controls what she reveals and redirects the conversation to Kwabena. The choice exposes the tension at the heart of the scene: Sweetpea has been trying to reclaim agency, but shutting down vulnerability also keeps support at a distance.

How does the episode connect competence with vulnerability?
Sweetpea’s investigation and her emotional response are linked by the control she tries to maintain. Her competence helps her pursue evidence and earn a professional result; it is also part of how she measures her worth. NME quotes Petche describing that pressure: “Her competence is her currency in this world and I think this season – and particularly this episode – really explores what she relies on for external validation.”
That makes the ending more than a refusal of Harper’s comfort. Sweetpea can keep working and make a disclosure, yet still struggle to show the hurt underneath. Petche’s reading leaves both parts intact: Sweetpea’s determination is real, and so is the vulnerability she is trying to contain.
