The dispute between It Ends With Us co-stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni ended in a settlement announced May 4, 2026, averting a scheduled trial. Lively had alleged sexual harassment connected to the film’s production and retaliation connected to its promotion; those allegations were not resolved by a court ruling establishing whether they were true. The Associated Press reported the settlement.
What is the dispute about?
It Ends With Us is a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. Blake Lively starred in the film, while Justin Baldoni was both her co-star and its director. The legal dispute between them centered on Lively’s allegations about conduct during production and retaliation related to the film’s promotion. Vogue’s timeline of the dispute and the AP’s settlement report describe the allegations; they should not be treated as established findings.
How the cast drama unfolded
August 2024: speculation during the film’s release
Public speculation about tension among cast members circulated during the film’s August 2024 release and promotional tour. That online discussion did not, by itself, confirm a specific backstage incident or explain what later became the legal dispute. TIME’s August 8, 2024 explainer covered the rumors as rumors.
December 2024: Lively files complaints
In December 2024, Lively filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department and a federal lawsuit. She alleged sexual harassment connected to the production and retaliation connected to promotion. These were claims made by Lively, not findings of fact established in the cited reporting. AP’s account and Vogue’s timeline outline the filings and dispute.

May 4, 2026: the parties settle
Lawyers for Lively and Baldoni announced on May 4, 2026, that they had reached a settlement, averting the scheduled trial. The settlement ended the dispute without a court ruling establishing the truth or falsity of the underlying allegations, according to the AP report.
What did the settlement statement say?
A joint statement attributed to Lively and Baldoni said: “Raising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors – and all survivors – is a goal that we stand behind.” The statement’s wording does not change the legal status of the underlying allegations: the settlement was not a judicial determination of them.
