In Zoom’s meeting context, computer (local) versus cloud recording tells you where a conventional recording is saved. “ISO” usually refers to isolating individual feeds for production. Zoom’s cloud settings can create separate participant audio files and selected video layouts, but that is not the same as a separate isolated video recording for every participant.
Here, “cloud recording” and “computer recording” refer specifically to Zoom’s documented features; ISO is illustrated by the separate ZoomISO production workflow. Other platforms may use these terms differently.
What does ISO recording mean?
In production, ISO is short for isolated sources or feeds. A production workflow may route each participant’s feed to its own output so an editor or live-production team can work with those sources separately. In the ZoomISO v3.0.1 example, individual participant feeds can be assigned to separate outputs. That is a production-routing workflow, not simply an archive saved to cloud storage. Liminal’s ZoomISO v3 documentation describes capture modes and permissions; confirm the exact behavior of the ISO tool and workflow you plan to use.
How Zoom computer, cloud and ISO workflows differ
| Decision point | Computer recording (Zoom) | Cloud recording (Zoom) | ISO-style workflow (ZoomISO example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the media goes | Saved to the computer’s hard disk, normally in a Zoom folder in Documents. | Stored in Zoom’s cloud and managed through the Zoom web portal. | Participant feeds are routed to production outputs; the cited documentation describes routing, not an ordinary cloud archive. |
| How you access it | Manage the files on the computer where they were recorded. | After processing, view, manage, share or download the recording through the portal. | Use the outputs in a production workflow; verify the capture and recording path required for the particular show. |
| Possible outputs | Zoom lists MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text for standard recordings. | Depending on settings, video layouts, audio-only files and chat text. | Separate outputs can be assigned to individual participant feeds. |
| Eligibility and setup | Zoom says computer recording is available with all accounts, subject to settings and device support. | Requires an eligible licensed account and enabled cloud recording; configure desired settings. | Requires appropriate capture permissions. ZoomISO documentation describes recording and live-stream capture modes and corresponding notices. |
| Best fit | You want recording files saved directly to a computer. | You need hosted recording with portal access, sharing or download after processing. | You need isolated participant feeds for editing or live production. |

Can Zoom cloud recording save separate tracks?
Yes, if you configure the relevant cloud-recording options. Zoom can save active-speaker, gallery and shared-screen layouts separately. It can also save one audio file for all participants, a separate audio file for each participant, or both. Zoom’s settings documentation says separate participant audio files can be provided for up to 200 speakers; phone participants’ audio is combined in one file. These are configurable options, not guaranteed defaults. See Changing basic and advanced cloud recording settings.
Separate audio tracks and separate chosen video layouts can help with editing, but they do not establish that Zoom cloud recording creates an isolated video file for every participant. If that is what your post-production workflow requires, verify the output capabilities of an ISO-specific tool.

What to know before choosing Zoom cloud recording
Check account eligibility and who can start it
Zoom’s documented requirements say cloud recording needs a licensed user on an eligible Pro, Business or Enterprise account, with cloud recording enabled and the desired recording settings selected. Only hosts and co-hosts can start a cloud recording. Account entitlements and settings can change, so check the current controls in your account before relying on this option.
Allow time for processing
A cloud recording must process after it is stopped before it can be viewed. Zoom says processing generally takes about twice the recorded duration and can occasionally take up to 24 hours under higher processing loads. Avoid planning a time-critical edit around immediate availability.

Know the documented limitations
- Cloud recording does not capture nonverbal feedback or meeting reactions.
- Zoom says cloud recordings cannot be embedded on websites.
- A live session has a 150-file limit across generated layouts and related files.
These requirements and limitations are described in Zoom’s Starting a cloud recording help page.
How to choose the right workflow
- Choose computer recording when you want files saved directly to a computer and can manage those local files.
- Choose cloud recording when centralized portal access, browser playback, sharing or downloading after processing matters, and your account is eligible.
- Investigate an ISO workflow when a live production or edit needs participant feeds isolated as production sources rather than only a conventional meeting recording.
For an ISO workflow, confirm what gets captured, where each output is sent, what permissions participants must grant, and whether the tool’s recording mode records the meeting itself or only captures feeds. ZoomISO’s v3 documentation says its recording capture mode does not itself record the call inside ZoomISO; its capture modes also involve permissions and notifications. Do not assume that “ISO” is a switch in Zoom’s cloud-recording settings.

Common misunderstandings
- “Cloud” means separate participant videos. Not necessarily. Zoom can save separate participant audio and selected video layouts when configured; that is not equivalent to a separate isolated video for each person.
- “ISO” means a file stored online. The term describes isolation of sources in the production example here, not the storage destination.
- “Cloud” means the recording is ready as soon as the meeting ends. Zoom processes the recording before it is available.
- Every platform uses the labels identically. It does not follow from Zoom’s terminology or the ZoomISO example; check the specific platform’s documentation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on a YouTube channel around the clock, that is a different workflow from recording a Zoom meeting. StreamNeo uploads your video to a cloud service, loops it to YouTube, and does not require a computer, OBS or home connection to stay on.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
