Choose an Amazon IVS Real-Time stage when speakers and participants need to talk or appear together; choose a Low-Latency channel when most attendees will watch a one-way presentation. For a hybrid event, let speakers interact on a stage and broadcast that stage to a channel for a larger viewing audience. AWS describes stage latency as under 300 milliseconds and channel latency as under five seconds; these are service descriptions, not guarantees of the latency every attendee will experience.
Choose the IVS delivery model for your event
| Consideration | Real-Time stage | Low-Latency channel |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Hosts and participants exchanging live audio and video | A presenter sending a program stream to an audience that primarily watches |
| AWS-described latency | Under 300 milliseconds for stage participants | Under five seconds for channel viewers |
| Basic setup | Create a stage, issue participant tokens, and use the IVS Broadcast SDK to publish and subscribe | Create a channel, send video to its ingest endpoint using a stream key, then share its playback URL |
| Scale planning | Check stage publisher and subscriber quotas for your account and Region | Check concurrent-view and simultaneous-stream quotas for your Region |
| Can be combined? | Yes. Broadcast the stage output to a channel for a larger audience | Receives the stage broadcast; channel viewers should not be assumed to have stage-level latency |
Actual latency depends on factors including attendee location, network, protocols, and the full streaming chain. See the Amazon IVS Low-Latency Streaming overview and Real-Time Streaming overview for AWS’s service descriptions.
Use a stage for genuine interaction
A stage is a virtual space where participants exchange video in real time. It fits panel discussions, Q&A sessions, workshops, and events where several people need to speak or respond rather than simply appear in a one-way broadcast.
Use a channel for a one-way presentation
A channel is the simpler fit when a presenter or production system sends one program feed and attendees primarily watch. Attendees use the channel’s playback URL; they do not join the presenter’s stage simply by viewing that feed.

Use stage-to-channel broadcast for a hybrid audience
When presenters need real-time interaction but the audience is much larger than the stage, broadcast the stage to an IVS Low-Latency channel. Speakers keep the stage experience while channel viewers watch the program stream. The two groups have different latency characteristics.
Plan the event flow and create the stream
For an interactive stage
- Prepare AWS access. Establish an AWS account and configure the IAM permissions needed to create and manage IVS resources.
- Create a stage. Follow AWS’s stage creation guide. Decide whether recording is needed before the event; recording is not enabled by default.
- Issue participant tokens. A participant token authenticates a user joining the stage. Distribute tokens through your application or event workflow, and treat them as credentials.
- Integrate the Broadcast SDK. AWS’s getting-started flow supports Web, Android, and iOS applications. Use the SDK to publish local participant video and audio and subscribe to other participants’ media.
- Test the event experience. Verify that intended speakers can join, publish, and see or hear one another from the networks and devices they will use on event day.

For a one-way channel
- Create an IVS channel. Configure the channel for the presentation workflow; AWS’s channel creation guide covers the process.
- Configure the contribution source. Set an encoder or streaming software to send to the channel’s ingest endpoint.
- Authorize the stream. Use the channel’s assigned stream key. Keep it secret: anyone who has the key can stream to the channel.
- Share playback access. Give attendees the channel playback URL. AWS describes the playback endpoint as globally usable through its content delivery network.
- Rehearse from the source location. Confirm that the encoder can connect and that the attendee playback link works before the event starts.
Check capacity before announcing attendance limits
AWS quota documentation accessed on October 3, 2026 lists the following default limits. They are quota values, not a promise that every account can support an event at that scale. Confirm the account’s actual Service Quotas and request increases in advance where needed.
| IVS resource | Listed quota | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Real-Time stage publishers | 12 publishers at once per account and Region | Count every person publishing to a stage, not merely the named hosts |
| Real-Time stage subscribers | 10,000 subscribers at once per account and Region; adjustable | Check the account quota against expected stage participation |
| Real-Time publishers across stages | 1,000 concurrent publishers per Region; adjustable | This is a regional quota across stages, distinct from the 12-publisher stage limit |
| Participant publish or subscribe duration | Maximum 24 hours | Plan reconnection or a new participant session for longer-running events |
| Low-Latency channel concurrent views | 15,000 per Region; adjustable | Confirm the quota for the event’s AWS Region and account |
| Low-Latency simultaneous streams | 100 per Region; adjustable | Check this if multiple channels will be live concurrently |
AWS’s Real-Time overview also describes potential audiences beyond 25,000 viewers and up to 12 hosts. That overview-level scale statement is not the same as the default 10,000 stage-subscriber quota: actual event capacity depends on the account’s quotas and configuration. See the Real-Time quotas and Low-Latency quotas before setting attendance expectations.

Make slides and shared content readable
Slides and presentations contain fine text and often change less rapidly than camera footage. AWS recommends layered encoding, such as simulcast, or a lower frame rate for text-heavy or slow-moving content. Its Real-Time optimization guide also explains that SDKs can reduce bitrate, frame rate, and resolution when network conditions are congested.
- Use slide layouts with text large enough to read on the devices your audience is likely to use.
- Test screen-shared content at the actual viewing size, not only on the presenter’s large monitor.
- Test with realistic network conditions. Adaptation can reduce bitrate, frame rate, or resolution under congestion, so confirm that important text remains legible.
- Do not assume one resolution or frame rate is right for every event; test the content and participant setup you intend to use.
Check presenter networks, especially on managed connections
IVS Real-Time uses WebRTC and WebSocket. AWS says media uses UDP by default. Subscribers can fall back to TCP, but TCP fallback is not supported for publishing; a host may therefore fail to publish if UDP is fully blocked.

- Ask the organization’s network or venue team to confirm the required IVS destinations and ports using AWS’s Real-Time network requirements.
- Test publishing from each presenter’s actual location and managed network, rather than relying only on a successful test from an unrestricted connection.
- If a presenter cannot publish, check whether UDP traffic is blocked before treating the issue as an SDK or account problem.
The IVS control plane is regional even though video ingest and playback are global. The console, APIs, channels, stream keys, playback key pairs, and recording configurations are among the regional resources, so keep the selected AWS Region in mind when creating and managing them.

| Recording choice | Useful when | IVS charge and storage considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Individual participant recording | Editors need separate speakers, or separate files are useful for moderation review | AWS says there is no additional IVS charge for this recording option; standard S3 storage and request charges apply |
| Composite recording | You want a single mixed program view ready for playback or distribution | AWS says an hourly IVS charge applies for the encoded video; S3 storage and request charges also apply |
Configure the recording destination
For individual participant recording, enable recording for the stage and configure a customer-owned S3 bucket. The stage, storage configuration, and S3 destination must be in the same AWS Region. Consult AWS’s Real-Time recording options and stage creation guide for setup details and applicable charges.
Keep a backup for important events
AWS warns that network problems between the stream source and AWS, or within AWS, can result in recording data loss because live streaming takes priority. Make a local recording as redundancy for an important event, then verify the cloud and local playback workflows before relying on either for post-event access.
Budget and operational checks
Capacity quotas and recording charges are separate planning questions: being within a quota does not establish the cost of a particular event. For recording, account for the applicable IVS composite-recording charge, when used, and standard S3 storage and request charges. Individual participant recording has no additional IVS charge according to AWS, but it still incurs S3 costs. Review current AWS pricing for the services and Region you intend to use; no event-specific total can be calculated from the quota figures alone.
- Choose stage, channel, or stage-to-channel delivery based on how attendees participate.
- Confirm the relevant account and regional quotas, then request adjustments early if required.
- Test slide readability, presenter network access, and the audience playback path.
- Enable recording explicitly, validate the S3 Region alignment, and prepare a local backup if the recording matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your event is instead a prerecorded program that needs to loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option from IVS: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video rather than a live camera feed. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
