Watching regular YouTube videos on a TV can be free; YouTube TV is a separate, paid live-television service. In the U.S., YouTube TV’s main plan is $82.99 per month, while newer genre-focused plans have lower standard prices. You do not need a YouTube TV membership to watch ordinary YouTube videos on your television.
Is the YouTube app on a TV free?
Yes. The regular YouTube app is free to use on a compatible smart TV, streaming device, game console, or cast-enabled television. It carries creator videos, music, news clips, livestreams, and other YouTube content, generally with ads. You need an internet connection, but you do not need a YouTube TV subscription.
YouTube and YouTube TV are separate apps and services. Some devices may let you open YouTube TV from within the YouTube app, but that does not make its live channels free. Installing or opening an app does not itself start a paid membership.

What is YouTube TV?
YouTube TV is an internet-delivered live-TV subscription service for U.S. viewers. Depending on the plan and location, it includes broadcast and cable networks, sports, news, local programming, and on-demand content. Its service information describes a lineup of more than 100 networks. The actual channels that matter to you—especially local stations and regional sports—depend on your market and plan.
The service is designed as a cable alternative: watch live channels through a program guide, record programs to cloud DVR, and use household profiles. It still requires an internet connection, and the TV must be compatible or connected to a supported streaming device.
How much does YouTube TV cost?
Prices below are U.S. prices published by YouTube in its February 2026 plan announcement. They are before optional add-ons; check the official signup page for the lineup, availability, taxes, trial, and final offer shown for your account.

The genre plans are intended to let viewers choose a narrower mix rather than pay for the main bundle. YouTube said the plans would roll out over several weeks and that more than 10 plans would be available across sports, news, entertainment, and family categories. A specific plan or promotion may not be available to every account, and a discounted rate rises to the standard price when its introductory period ends. Review the channel list and price at checkout before subscribing.
Add-ons can increase the bill. YouTube lists options including NFL Sunday Ticket, NFL RedZone with Sports Plus, HBO Max, and 4K Plus. Taxes or other checkout charges may also apply. The regular YouTube Premium subscription, if you want ad-free ordinary YouTube, is a separate cost.
Is there a free YouTube TV trial?
Eligible new subscribers may be offered a trial, but there is no single trial length that applies to everyone. YouTube says eligibility generally requires that you are new to YouTube TV and have not previously redeemed a YouTube TV free trial. The duration and terms are shown during signup, and add-on trials may have separate arrangements. A payment method is normally required; YouTube may place a temporary authorization on it, and prepaid credit cards are not supported for purchases.

Unless you cancel, the trial automatically converts to a paid membership at the displayed price, with separately selected add-ons potentially billed as well. Before starting, note the trial’s end date, review the add-ons, and set a reminder a few days ahead. You can check remaining trial time in YouTube TV → profile photo → Settings → Membership. If you cancel during the trial, access normally continues until the trial ends. See YouTube’s free-trial and billing guidance for the terms attached to your offer.
What do you get for the membership?
- Live channels: The main plan bundles more than 100 networks across sports, news, entertainment, and other categories. A large headline count does not mean every channel is included.
- Local programming: Local stations may be available, but the lineup depends on your address. Check it by ZIP code before relying on YouTube TV for a specific ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC station.
- Unlimited cloud DVR: You can record programs without a storage-space cap. It is cloud storage, not permanent ownership: recordings are subject to service and licensing rules.
- Household profiles: A membership supports up to six accounts for a household. That does not mean six unrelated households can share it or that six streams can run at once. Standard simultaneous viewing is limited to up to three devices, and household, home-area, travel, and location rules still apply.
- Viewing features: The service offers a program guide and features such as multiview and key plays on supported content or devices. Availability can vary.
Details and restrictions can change; consult YouTube’s membership and viewing rules. Sports availability also depends on rights, blackouts, local stations, and any required add-on. A channel’s presence does not guarantee that every game is available.
Costs beyond the monthly price
YouTube TV avoids a traditional cable box and installation appointment, but it is not cost-free beyond the subscription. Consider:

- Internet service and data: Streaming requires broadband. Multiple TVs, weak Wi-Fi, or a data cap can affect both cost and picture quality.
- Hardware: If your television cannot run the app, you may need a compatible streaming device. Check your exact TV model before buying one.
- Add-ons and separate services: Premium networks, sports packages, and content outside your plan can add recurring charges.
- Promotional expiration: A discounted introductory rate is temporary. Budget for the standard monthly amount before accepting the offer.
- Other subscriptions: YouTube Premium is separate, as are services needed for shows or games not included in your plan.
Will it work on your TV?
YouTube TV supports a range of smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, phones, tablets, and computers, but support depends on model, operating system, and app availability. YouTube’s device compatibility list includes categories such as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV and Android TV devices, PlayStation and Xbox, and select LG, Samsung, Hisense, and Vizio televisions. The specific supported models and requirements matter; do not assume every smart TV works.
You will need a compatible device, broadband, a Google/YouTube account, and a valid payment method for a paid plan. Local programming may require location permission or verification; some devices without built-in GPS require verification through a mobile device. Check the current support page before subscribing or purchasing hardware.

You can cancel or pause YouTube TV. A cancellation generally leaves access through the end of the paid period, but recordings may expire 21 days after cancellation. Do not treat unlimited DVR as a permanent archive.

YouTube TV compared with alternatives
Hulu + Live TV is a bundle alternative for households that also want Hulu’s on-demand library, Disney+, and ESPN-related access. Hulu advertises an ad-supported bundle at $89.99 per month and a three-day trial for eligible users; its offer includes 100-plus live channels and unlimited DVR. That advertised price is higher than YouTube TV’s main-plan price, so compare the included libraries and channels rather than assuming it is cheaper. See Hulu’s current Live TV offer for terms.
Other options serve different needs: Sling TV is often considered for smaller or more customizable channel packages; Fubo for sports-oriented households; and Philo for entertainment viewers who do not need broad local or major sports coverage. Prices, channels, rights, and promotions change, so verify current lineups directly before choosing. An antenna plus free or lower-cost streaming apps may minimize recurring costs if you mainly want local broadcast stations, but reception varies by location and it will not replace cable networks or all sports coverage.
Who should pay for YouTube TV?
YouTube TV is most likely to be worth considering if you regularly watch live sports, local broadcasts, news, and cable networks; record many programs; and want a shared household guide with separate profiles. Before subscribing, write down the channels you actually watch, confirm local stations and sports availability at your address, compare genre-plan lineups, check the post-promotion price, and count how many people will stream at once.

It is probably poor value if you mainly watch ordinary YouTube videos, prefer on-demand shows and films, need the lowest possible monthly bill, or watch only one or two channels that can be bought separately. It may also disappoint if your internet is unreliable, you have a strict data cap, or you expect paid live TV to be ad-free.
