No verified announcement says YouTube will be removed from Roku in December 2026. Google’s current help page still explains how to install YouTube on Roku, and Roku’s Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript says the platform carries YouTube. The “December” warning traces to a 2021 dispute, not a confirmed shutdown this year.
Why the December warning keeps resurfacing
In October 2021, Roku and Google were negotiating the terms for distributing YouTube on Roku devices. Google said its agreement covering the main YouTube app would expire on December 9, 2021, if the companies did not reach a deal. Their public disagreement involved claims about search treatment, data access and hardware requirements; the companies disputed each other’s accounts. Contemporaneous reporting on the deadline noted that the proposed change primarily concerned new Roku devices. Google said existing users could continue to use the apps.
Roku and Google reached an agreement on December 8, 2021, before the deadline, and the threatened removal of the main YouTube app did not happen. Roku’s historical timeline records the agreement. That old date is why a headline mentioning removal “in December” needs its year: the original deadline was December 9, 2021, not December 2026.
YouTube and YouTube TV are different apps
Some recycled accounts blur the two services. YouTube is Google’s general video platform; YouTube TV is a separate paid live-TV service. They have distinct apps and distribution histories.

Reporting on the dispute distinguishes the YouTube TV app’s removal from the later warning about the main YouTube app. A post that says “YouTube was removed” may be referring imprecisely to YouTube TV.

- From the Roku Home screen, open Streaming Store or Streaming Channels.
- Choose Search and search for YouTube.
- Select the YouTube app and choose Download.
- Look for the “Channel added” confirmation after installation.
If the app is already installed and working, do not remove it because of a recycled headline. For sign-in, follow YouTube’s on-screen process; Google documents TV and streaming-device sign-in by QR code or activation code here.

An app-store problem on one device is not proof of a platform-wide removal. Google lists Roku as a supported streaming platform but cautions that YouTube may not be available on every individual model. Availability can also vary by country, device and software compatibility.

- Check whether other Roku channels work. If several are unavailable, investigate the Roku or internet connection rather than assuming a YouTube-specific change.
- Restart the Roku, verify its internet connection, then check for system and channel updates.
- If the app is present but fails, try opening it again and use YouTube’s official sign-in flow if prompted.
- If YouTube does not appear in search, check the model’s compatibility and regional availability. An older device may no longer support the current app experience.
Google’s supported-device information lists Roku alongside platforms including Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, TiVo, game consoles and smart TVs. That platform-level listing is not a guarantee for every model.
Would a Roku change delete your YouTube account?
App availability and account data are separate issues. A dispute over distribution on a particular TV platform would affect access through that device; it would not, by itself, delete a Google account or its YouTube subscriptions, playlists or watch history. A paid YouTube TV membership is also separate from whether its Roku app is available. The available evidence does not establish what would happen to every type of purchase or subscription entitlement in a hypothetical future change, so check the relevant Google terms for those specifics.

Alternatives if you cannot watch on Roku
If YouTube is unavailable on a particular Roku, first check whether your television already has a native YouTube app. Other supported options include Google TV or Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, compatible Chromecast or Google Cast receivers, and game consoles. You can also watch in a browser on another connected device.

Phone-to-TV options are not interchangeable: screen mirroring duplicates a phone display, while casting sends playback to a compatible receiver and uses the phone as a controller. Neither is guaranteed to work with every Roku. Compatibility depends on the Roku model, phone, operating system and network; separate Wi-Fi networks, guest networks, VPNs and unsupported protocols can prevent discovery.

Should you replace your Roku?
Not because of this headline alone. If your Roku runs YouTube reliably, replacing it is unnecessary on the evidence currently available. Consider another device only if the Roku is too old or unreliable, lacks services you need, or you want a different ecosystem. Compare app availability, video and HDR support, remote and voice-search features, HDMI and power needs, accessibility controls, and software-update longevity before buying.
- Google TV devices suit people who want Google’s TV ecosystem and Google Cast, but involve a different interface and remote from Roku.
- Fire TV devices may suit households already using Amazon services or Alexa; the interface is more Amazon-centered, so confirm the exact model’s video features.
- Apple TV 4K fits households invested in Apple devices, but can be more than needed if the only goal is watching YouTube.
Google’s current documentation continues to list Roku for YouTube, but it does not promise permanent availability. No verified December 2026 removal has been established.
