Its creator, Mae Martin, drew on their own adolescence, a friend’s experience at a troubled-teen institute and research into the troubled-teen industry. Tall Pines Academy and the series’ central thriller plot are invented.
What inspired Wayward?
Martin told Netflix Tudum they were “a wayward teen in the early 2000s” and that their close friend Nicole was sent to a troubled-teen institute at 16. Martin said the stories Nicole shared after returning from the institute prompted their interest in the industry.
In a TIME interview, Martin identified their friend as Nicole Simon and described the series as “a love letter to that friendship, and to teen friendship.” Simon read scripts and spoke with the writers, according to Martin. Martin also said another writer on the show had attended one of these schools. Those experiences informed the writing; they do not make the characters or events a direct account of Simon’s life.
Is Tall Pines Academy real?
No. Netflix describes Tall Pines Academy as fictional in its series information. The show is a thriller built from personal testimony, research and dramatic invention—not a documentary about a named institution.

Martin said they researched Synanon, a 1970s Los Angeles self-help cult, while exploring the history of the troubled-teen industry. In an interview with Them, Martin said the pilot had been written about six years before that 2025 interview and that the research helped shape its cult-thriller themes. Martin’s research into Synanon does not establish Tall Pines as a portrayal of that group.
Which parts reflect real-world concerns—and which are dramatized?
Martin told Them that some practices viewers might assume were heightened for horror, including attack therapy and theatrical behavioral techniques, were in their view true to life. That is the creator’s account, not an independent survey or legal finding about every facility. Experiences also differed: Martin told TIME that people who attended these programs did not all have the same story.

Separate reporting provides broader context about institutional concerns. TIME reported that a June 2024 U.S. Senate Finance Committee report addressed abusive and neglectful practices in youth residential treatment facilities. TIME quoted the committee’s statement: “Children that enter these facilities often leave even more traumatized than when they arrived.” This is a reported concern about facilities, not evidence that every program or attendee had the same experience.
The series’ “Leap” and its extraordinary events belong to the show’s fictional thriller framework. Martin has described the Leap as an amplified metaphor for stages and milestones in programs, not a literal treatment protocol. Netflix’s ending explainer discusses Martin’s comments about fictionalizing real-life feelings and events.

- Personal account: Martin’s adolescence and Simon’s reported experience explain part of the creative starting point; they are not proof of what every student experienced.
- Reported institutional concerns: TIME’s account of the 2024 Senate committee report concerns youth residential facilities, rather than Tall Pines specifically.
- Fictional plot: Tall Pines, the Leap and the series’ extraordinary events are elements of a scripted thriller, not evidence about real-world treatment.
That distinction answers the question without reducing the show to either a true story or pure invention: Wayward uses real experiences and research as inspiration, then reshapes them into fiction.
