Its premise has a real-life parallel: Netflix Tudum says the series’ concept draws on headlines including the 1972 crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes. That flight carried a rugby team and other passengers—not the show’s fictional girls’ soccer team.
What happened in the real plane crash?
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. Netflix Tudum says 29 people were left stranded. The passengers included members of a Uruguayan rugby team traveling to a match, as well as their companions. Netflix Tudum’s account of the crash and the Associated Press’s overview of its retellings describe the event behind the comparison.

How is Flight 571 different from the crash in Yellowjackets?
| What to compare | Yellowjackets | Flight 571 |
|---|---|---|
| Passengers | A fictional high-school girls’ soccer team, according to Paramount Press Express / SHOWTIME. | A Uruguayan rugby team and other passengers, according to Netflix Tudum. |
| Crash location | Remote northern wilderness, in Paramount’s series description. | The Andes, where Flight 571 crashed on October 13, 1972, according to Netflix Tudum. |
| Connection | A fictional drama whose concept draws on real-life headlines, Netflix Tudum says. | A real disaster that offers a historical parallel, not the factual story of the show’s characters. |
That distinction matters: calling the show “based on Flight 571” overstates the connection. “Inspired in part by real-life survival stories” or “shares a real-life parallel with the Andes disaster” is more accurate than describing it as a direct retelling.
Where can you learn about the real Andes disaster?
The Associated Press identifies Frank Marshall’s 1993 film Alive as a dramatization of the disaster. It also reports that the 2023 film Society of the Snow is based on Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name. These works tell the story of Flight 571; they are not Yellowjackets tie-ins. The AP’s account, “The 1972 Andes plane crash story has been told many times. ‘Society of the Snow’ is something new,” provides context on those adaptations.
