Twitter has not died, and the available evidence does not show that shutdown is imminent. But after Elon Musk’s October 2022 acquisition, the service suffered a sharp advertising decline and its most active users posted less often. “Brain death” is a metaphor for that loss of commercial health and engagement—not a literal description of a platform that continues to operate.
Why people say Twitter is dying
“Twitter” became X after Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in October 2022. The change was more than a new name: the acquisition was followed by executive changes, staff cuts and concern among advertisers, according to the Associated Press’s 2023 review of the first year under Musk.
Those developments made the platform’s condition a fair question. But different measures tell different stories. Advertising revenue estimates indicate substantial commercial damage; research on user activity shows a cohort that stayed but posted less; and X’s own reports show large-scale enforcement operations. None of those facts, alone or together, establishes that the service has closed or is about to.
What happened to Twitter’s advertising business?
Advertising deterioration is the clearest evidence of commercial strain. Reuters reported on October 4, 2023, that third-party firm Guideline’s estimates showed U.S. monthly ad revenue was down at least 55% year over year in every month after Musk bought the company. The steepest decline in the reported period was 78% in December 2022. These are estimates of U.S. ad spending, not audited figures for X’s global revenue.

The Associated Press reported in 2023 that Musk said, “We’re still negative cash flow,” attributing it to “about a 50% drop in advertising revenue plus heavy debt load.” That statement and Guideline’s estimates have different scopes and methods; they should not be treated as two measurements of the same audited figure.
In 2023, X hired Linda Yaccarino, a former NBC advertising executive, as CEO to help rebuild advertiser relationships. That appointment signals how urgently management treated the ad business, but does not by itself show whether the repair effort succeeded. The cited revenue estimates are historical, and they do not establish X’s current profitability.

Did users leave, or did they use Twitter less?
Pew Research Center’s analysis of public posts from January 2022 through April 10, 2023, found that the most active users continued using Twitter but posted less often after the acquisition. Pew’s July 2023 summary said eight in ten adults who had been among the most active users in January–April 2022 remained among the most active after Musk took over.
This is evidence of reduced posting intensity among a previously active group, not proof that all users behaved the same way. The findings do not provide a reliable 2026 monthly active-user count, and a study of public posts cannot establish the full size or activity of the platform’s audience. The evidence supports “some highly active users stayed and posted less,” not either a total exodus or a definitive claim that X remains broadly popular.

What do X’s moderation numbers show?
X’s transparency reports record extensive enforcement activity. The figures below are first-party counts published by X; they measure enforcement actions, not how much harmful content existed, how consistently policies were applied, or whether users and advertisers consider the service trustworthy.

X’s report under the EU Digital Services Act for April–September 2024 separately recorded 159,011 accounts suspended for child-sexual-exploitation policy violations and 7,321 for violent or hateful entities. These are also first-party enforcement counts. They do not reveal the prevalence of the underlying material or settle whether enforcement is effective or trusted.

Large numbers can demonstrate that systems are taking action at scale, but they are not a quality rating. Without independent measures of policy consistency, error rates and outcomes, the counts cannot answer whether moderation has made X safer or more reliable.

The evidence cited here does not establish that X is bankrupt, nor does it provide a verified shutdown timetable. Musk’s 2023 comments, as reported by the Associated Press, described negative cash flow and heavy debt at that time. Those comments indicate financial pressure, but they are not a current audited account or proof of imminent closure.

There is also no reliable 2026 monthly active-user count, audited post-acquisition valuation or current profitability figure established by these sources. Historical estimates should not be stretched into a present-day declaration that the service is either healthy or finished. A platform can remain online while facing serious commercial strain.
Is X still worth using?
That depends on what you need from it. If your work or community depends on a particular audience being there, assess the value of that access directly rather than assuming the service is either thriving or unusable. If your decision depends on current audience size, advertising reach, moderation quality or long-term stability, the evidence summarized here is not enough to verify those conditions in 2026.
- For readers and viewers: judge whether the accounts, reporting and communities you follow still provide value, and consider whether you need another way to reach them.
- For creators and organizations: avoid making X the only route to your audience if continuity matters. The evidence here does not establish how portable any particular audience or archive will be.
- For advertisers: historical U.S. ad-spending estimates show why the platform’s commercial health became a concern, but they do not substitute for current campaign data or a present-day assessment of suitability.
The most accurate reading is not that Twitter has vanished. It is that the platform experienced measurable commercial deterioration and weaker posting intensity among a studied group of highly active users, while X continued to operate and report large-scale moderation actions. Whether that amounts to a lasting decline—or a business that can recover—cannot be determined from these historical figures alone.
