The claim is that the Toy Story 5 teaser shown at Disney’s 2024 D23 conference reused animation that looks like Toy Story Apple Watch faces from 2017. Michael Burkhardt reported that comparison on 9to5Mac on August 10, 2024, and credited it to a video by Dylan McDonald on X. The report describes what appears to match. It does not show how Pixar made the teaser, and no Pixar or Disney statement confirming reuse appears in the sources available for this article.
What the 2024 report actually alleged
The 9to5Mac article says the D23 teaser “appears to reuse” elements from Toy Story Apple Watch faces that Apple introduced with watchOS 4 in 2017. The wording matters. The claim is a visual resemblance noticed by viewers, not a finding from a studio audit, a leaked production file, or an interview with the animators.
Burkhardt attributes the observation to Dylan McDonald, whose comparison video was posted on X. The article therefore rests on one social-media comparison, reported secondhand. It is a plausible and specific allegation, but it has not been confirmed by the people who made the teaser.
Which trailer is being discussed
The story concerns the teaser shown at D23 in 2024. It does not cover every later Toy Story 5 trailer, poster, or marketing clip. Disney’s official teaser page identifies the video as “Toy Story 5 | Teaser Trailer,” with the tagline “The age of toys is over…?” and lists a theatrical date of June 19, 2026. Anyone checking the claim should confirm which video they are looking at, because later promotional material may be different footage.

What Disney’s official pages establish
Disney’s official movie page describes the film’s premise: Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the other toys face a tablet device called Lilypad, which has its own ideas about what is best for Bonnie. That is useful story context, but it says nothing about the Apple Watch comparison.
The official teaser listing and film page are therefore sources for the film’s identity and release information only. They do not confirm or deny that older animation was reused. The June 19, 2026 date was the listed theatrical date on Disney’s pages when those pages were reviewed; that date is now in the past as of this article’s publication, and this article does not independently confirm how the release played out.

What is not established
- That Pixar reused the Apple Watch face animation. The report says the teaser “appears to” do so.
- That the animation came from Apple’s watch faces rather than from a shared source, a common style, or independent work that happens to look similar.
- That the comparison was checked frame by frame by a neutral party. The available reporting describes a social-media visual comparison.
- Any statement from Pixar, Disney, or Apple on the question.
How to weigh a claim like this
When a trailer is said to recycle older material, separate three questions:
- Who made the observation? Here, a social-media comparison credited in a 2024 news report.
- What exactly is said to match? Here, animation resembling Toy Story watch faces associated with watchOS 4 in 2017.
- Has the studio or a named creator confirmed it? Not in the sources reviewed for this article.
A resemblance that viewers can compare side by side is worth reporting. A production fact requires confirmation from the people who made the work, and that confirmation is absent here.

Bottom line on the trailer
The teaser has been reported as reusing older Toy Story watch-face animation, based on a 2024 comparison credited to Dylan McDonald and reported by 9to5Mac. That is an allegation about visual resemblance, not a confirmed fact about how Pixar produced the trailer. Disney’s official pages identify the teaser and film but do not address the comparison.
