One-year-old Evelyn Mae Mathas became a TikTok sensation after her grandmother, hairstylist Trina King, styled her naturally curly hair into a playful, retro bouffant inspired by The Golden Girls. The look was a blowout—not a permanent haircut—and the videos paired the grown-up style with toddler-sized antics.
Who is the toddler in the Golden Girls hair videos?
Evelyn Mae Mathas is the toddler featured in the videos. Her grandmother, Dallas-based hairstylist Trina King, created the look and posted the clips to TikTok. Evelyn’s mother, Autumn Mathas, is also a Dallas-based hairstylist, according to People’s exclusive syndicated by Yahoo.
The first widely reported clip showed one-year-old Evelyn dancing and eating chocolate in King’s salon. KRTV described her style as a wet-set bouffant and reported 1.4 million views for the 18-second video when its 2024 article was published. KRTV linked to King’s original TikTok post.
How did Trina King create the look?
King told CBS News Texas that Evelyn’s hair is naturally curly. “She already has a lot of the curls. We’re going to just spray it down,” she said. King described trimming the hair even and then blow-drying it under, adding, “That’s what kind of started the Betty White trend.” The account supports describing the result as a salon-created blowout on Evelyn’s curls; it does not identify a particular spray, dryer, brush, or brand. The available account describes styling rather than a specific, lasting haircut. It mentions an even trim as part of the process, but does not say the bouffant itself was cut into Evelyn’s hair.
Why did Evelyn’s videos connect with viewers?
The central joke is the contrast: a very young child sporting a hairstyle associated with older women from The Golden Girls. The clips leaned into that comic mismatch by imagining Evelyn doing the sorts of things viewers associate with the sitcom’s characters. Her mother captured the family’s affection for the bit: “She is a little 50-year-old in a one-year-old’s body.”

CBS News Texas also relayed the family’s account that some viewers found comfort in the videos because they associated The Golden Girls with loved ones. The appeal, then, was not only the hairstyle but also the family’s playful presentation of it and the memories it brought up for some viewers.
How many views did the first video get?
The reported figures are snapshots from different 2024 accounts, not a verified current count. KRTV reported 1.4 million views for the 18-second clip when its article was published. Later, King told CBS News Texas that the first “Golden Girls” video had received 16 million views. Those figures come from separate reports and should not be combined or treated as a live total.
