Yes. The Impossible (2012) is based on María Belón and her family’s experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The Spanish family was on holiday in Thailand when the tsunami struck. Belón helped shape the screenplay, but the film should be understood as a dramatization of one family’s experience—not a scene-by-scene record or a comprehensive account of the disaster.
What happened to the real family in The Impossible?
María Belón, her husband Enrique Álvarez, and their three sons were in Thailand when the tsunami separated them. Belón found her eldest son, Lucas, in the water; the two younger boys were with Álvarez. Belón was severely injured and received emergency surgery at Takua Pa hospital. The family reunited the following day. Belón was later evacuated to Singapore, where she recovered for four months, according to the Los Angeles Times’ 2012 account.

How closely was the film connected to Belón’s experience?
Belón told the filmmakers her story and spent time on the Thailand set, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2012. In a CNN interview with Belón and Álvarez, CNN reported that Belón collaborated on the screenplay to add realistic details and that part of the film was shot at the location where the tsunami hit.
That involvement gives the film a close connection to the family’s account, but it does not establish that every scene, line of dialogue, timeline detail, or character change is literal. The available reporting supports the real-life premise and broad survival story, not a scene-by-scene verification.

What the film leaves outside its family-centered story
The Impossible centers on a Spanish family. The Guardian’s 2012 coverage records criticism that the film sidelines the wider Thai experience of the disaster. It also notes Ewan McGregor’s defense that the film depicts Thai people helping survivors, including medical staff and local residents.
Both points matter: the film shows assistance from Thai people, but its focus is not a comprehensive account of the tsunami’s effects on Thai communities. ABC News reported in 2012 that the disaster killed more than 200,000 people and left millions homeless; those figures convey the scale beyond the family’s story, not a fresh estimate or a measure of the family’s experience. ABC News’ report provides that context.

Belón’s words about surviving the tsunami
In a CNN interview, María Belón, identified as a tsunami survivor, said: “The fears you think you have, they become nothing when something really, really becomes.” CNN’s interview captures her reflection without turning the film into a record of every survivor’s experience.
