That placed it behind Sinners and ahead of The Accountant 2. It was one of the biggest legacy re-release weekends on record, but it was not an outright record. Disney’s own comparison names two larger domestic re-release weekends.
How the re-release was offered
Lucasfilm announced on February 25, 2025 that Revenge of the Sith, first released in 2005, would return to U.S. theaters and select international territories on April 25, 2025. The engagement was planned as a one-week 20th-anniversary run. It was offered in several formats, including 4DX for the first time.
The opening-weekend estimates
Disney’s April 27, 2025 box-office report put the opening weekend at an estimated $25.2 million domestically and $17 million internationally, for an estimated $42.2 million worldwide. The film played in 2,775 domestic theaters and ranked No. 2 domestically.
| Territory | Estimated opening weekend | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic (U.S. and Canada) | $25.2 million | The Walt Disney Company, April 27, 2025 |
| International | $17 million | The Walt Disney Company, April 27, 2025 |
| Worldwide | $42.2 million | The Walt Disney Company, April 27, 2025 |
These are Sunday estimates. They are the figures used in weekend rankings, not final accounting.

Where it placed on the weekend chart
The Associated Press published the contemporaneous weekend chart, which used estimated Friday-through-Sunday ticket sales for U.S. and Canadian theaters. Final domestic figures were due the following Monday.
| Rank | Film | Estimated domestic weekend gross |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sinners | $45 million |
| 2 | Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (re-release) | $25.2 million |
| 3 | The Accountant 2 | $24.5 million |
On those estimates, the re-release beat The Accountant 2 by about $0.7 million and trailed Sinners by about $19.8 million.
Rank #2
Why “record-setting” overstates the result
Disney’s report describes the weekend as “one of the top-grossing re-release weekends in domestic industry history.” It then names the two larger re-release weekends it is behind:
| Film | Re-release | Domestic weekend gross, as reported by Disney |
|---|---|---|
| Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope | January 1997 Special Edition | $36 million |
| The Lion King | September 2011 3D release | $30 million |
| Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith | April 2025 20th-anniversary engagement | $25.2 million (estimate) |
The defensible description is “one of the biggest legacy re-release weekends,” not “record-setting.” The comparison uses nominal reported grosses and does not adjust for inflation or changes in ticket prices. The available sources also do not establish a complete all-time ranking of re-release weekends.

Box Office Mojo’s Star Wars franchise table, accessed October 8, 2026, lists the 20th-anniversary re-release at a $25,495,049 opening, a $34,107,714 domestic lifetime gross, and a maximum of 2,800 theaters. These database figures are not the same measurement as the Sunday estimates. The opening figure is slightly higher than Disney’s $25.2 million estimate, and the lifetime figure counts the whole domestic engagement, not one weekend.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Opening weekend, estimate | $25.2 million | The Walt Disney Company, April 27, 2025 |
| Opening weekend, database listing | $25,495,049 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 |
| Domestic lifetime re-release gross | $34,107,714 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 |
| Maximum domestic theaters | 2,800 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 |
The same database lists the 2024 re-release of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace at $13,029,994 domestic. On that listing, the Revenge of the Sith re-release’s domestic total is roughly 2.6 times larger. Re-release timing and engagement length differ between the two, so this is a comparison of listed totals, not a measure of demand.

- An audience breakdown explaining who attended the opening weekend.
Readers who need a precise claim should cite the opening estimate with its date, and use the Box Office Mojo totals for the cumulative domestic figure.
