Short answer: The original Korean Squid Game is over in its announced form. Netflix released Season 3 on June 27, 2025 and labeled it the show’s third and final season. There is no announced Korean Season 4.
The reported American version is a different matter: the David Fincher-associated project appears to have been shelved, according to recent secondary reporting, but Netflix has not publicly confirmed a cancellation. The franchise itself continues through Squid Game: The Challenge, Squid Game: Unleashed and licensed merchandise.

As of August 12, 2026, there is no Korean Squid Game Season 4. Netflix billed Season 3 as the Korean series’ “third and final season,” and released it globally on June 27, 2025. The season also closes Gi-hun’s story, according to Netflix’s official finale coverage.
The confusion comes from two separate developments being treated as one. Season 3 ends with an American-set recruiter sequence that suggests the wider game could continue, while a separate English-language project associated with David Fincher was discussed under names including Squid Game: America and the reported working title Heckler. That project was later reported as scrapped, although Netflix has not publicly issued a formal cancellation statement.

The status of every “next Squid Game” project
| Project | Status | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Korean scripted series | Finished | Season 3 was officially presented as the third and final season and premiered June 27, 2025. |
| Korean Season 4 | Not announced | There is no official Netflix order for another season starring Gi-hun or continuing the original Korean storyline. |
| American version | Apparently shelved | Recent secondary reporting says the Fincher-associated project is no longer moving forward at Netflix. Netflix has not publicly confirmed the cancellation. |
| Squid Game: The Challenge | Separate franchise project | This is an unscripted reality competition, not Season 4 of the Korean drama. |
| Squid Game: Unleashed | Official game | The game extends the property into interactive entertainment but is not evidence of a new scripted season. |
Why Season 3 means the Korean story is over
Netflix’s own announcement describes Season 3 as the “third and final season,” rather than simply the next installment. Its official Season 3 announcement also set June 27, 2025, as the global premiere date.
That wording matters. A finale can leave questions unanswered or create space for a spin-off without becoming a promise of another season. In this case, Netflix’s official ending material presents Season 3 as the conclusion of the competition and of Gi-hun’s journey. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s comments in Netflix’s ending explainer likewise frame the ending as the conclusion of the main series.
So the accurate answer is not that Netflix “canceled Season 4.” It is that Netflix has not announced a Korean Season 4, and the original series was designed and marketed to end with Season 3. A future revival is always theoretically possible in entertainment, but there is no current announcement to support one.
Spoilers: what the Season 3 ending actually sets up
The finale includes an American-facing sequence involving a recruiter. That scene is the main reason viewers expected the franchise to continue in the United States. It broadens the premise beyond the Korean setting and makes the game appear capable of existing in other countries.
But a tease is not the same as a renewal. The ending can be read in two ways:
- As closure: Gi-hun’s central story reaches its intended endpoint, bringing the Korean drama to a conclusion.
- As franchise expansion: The world of the games could theoretically support new characters, locations and organizers, including an American story.
The second reading is an inference from the finale, not an official order for a new show. Netflix’s materials found for this update call Season 3 final and do not announce Season 4. The distinction is especially important because headlines often turn a deliberately open-ended franchise possibility into the much stronger claim that a sequel has been approved.
What happened to the American version?
The reported American project was separate from a Korean Season 4. It was not presented as the next season of Gi-hun’s story, and it should not be described as “Season 4” without qualification.
Earlier reports linked the project to director David Fincher and writer Dennis Kelly, with members of the Korean Squid Game creative team also associated with it. Entertainment and industry-production reports later circulated more specific details, including a planned Los Angeles shoot beginning February 26, 2026 and producer credits for Hwang Dong-hyuk and Kim Ji-yeon. The project was reported under names such as Squid Game: America and, later, the working title Heckler. Coverage of the project’s development can be found in The Playlist’s report on Fincher’s reported pivot and GamesRadar’s earlier production update.

Those details made the project sound substantial, but they did not amount to a conventional public Netflix series order. In the sources reviewed for this update, Netflix had not publicly confirmed the cast, the filming start, or a release date.
The newest reporting located for this status update, published in early August 2026, says Fincher’s Squid Game project is no longer happening at Netflix. GamesRadar reported that the project was reportedly dead. Because that is secondary reporting rather than an official Netflix cancellation notice, the careful description is “reportedly scrapped,” “apparently shelved” or “reportedly no longer moving forward.”
Was the American project officially canceled?
Not publicly, based on the information available for this update. The latest report says the project is dead, but Netflix has not been found to have released a formal statement confirming either its cancellation or the reason for it.
That means readers should be skeptical of explanations claiming that Netflix abandoned the show because of ratings, budget, creative disagreements, audience backlash or Fincher’s other commitments. No reliable source located in this research establishes one of those reasons. The project could potentially be revived or reworked in the future, but there is currently no confirmed production or release plan.
Why this update is disappointing
The disappointment is understandable because the Season 3 finale appears to point directly toward an international continuation. Viewers were left with a recognizable American thread just as reports about a Fincher-led English-language project were circulating. That combination created the expectation that the next chapter had already been chosen.

The latest status breaks that apparent connection:
- The Korean show ended as planned with Season 3.
- The finale left the broader premise expandable.
- The most prominent reported American project now appears to have been shelved.
- Netflix has not announced a replacement American series, a Korean Season 4 or a release date for another scripted installment.
In other words, the franchise has an unresolved possibility rather than a scheduled next chapter. That is different from a confirmed cancellation of Squid Game as a whole.

Squid Game: The Challenge
Squid Game: The Challenge is Netflix’s unscripted competition series, in which real contestants compete in challenges inspired by the fictional drama. It is a separate production, not a continuation of Gi-hun’s narrative and not a disguised Season 4.
Netflix’s official Tudum page has promoted recruitment activity for Season 3 of The Challenge. That confirms ongoing activity around the reality-competition branch, but it says nothing about the status of a new Korean scripted season.

Netflix also promotes Squid Game: Unleashed, an official game based on the property. It gives fans another way to interact with the franchise, but the existence or promotion of the game should not be used as evidence that a television Season 4 exists.
Merchandise and collectibles
The commercial side of the franchise remains active. Netflix maintains an official Squid Game merchandise collection with clothing, costumes, toys and collectibles. Netflix has also identified partners and product lines involving brands such as PUMA, Funko Pop!, Mattel Creations, Hot Topic, BoxLunch, KAWS and The Woobles in its Season 3 consumer-products announcement.
If you want a physical reminder of the series rather than another season, a Squid Game Funko Pop collectible is a natural place to start searching. Marketplace stock, seller quality and licensing can vary, so check the current listing and product details before buying; the existence of a collectible is not a sign that Season 4 has been ordered.
How to interpret future headlines
| If a headline says… | Read it as… |
|---|---|
| “Netflix canceled Squid Game Season 4” | Likely an inaccurate conflation of the finished Korean series and the separate American project. No Korean Season 4 had been publicly announced. |
| “David Fincher’s Squid Game was canceled” | A reference to the reported American project, not to the Korean drama’s fourth season. |
| “The Season 3 ending leaves the door open” | A reasonable interpretation of the finale, but not confirmation that another series has been ordered. |
| “Squid Game is returning” | Check whether the story means The Challenge, Unleashed, merchandise or a genuinely new scripted production. |
Final verdict
Squid Game is over as the original Korean scripted story. Season 3 was officially the final season, and there is no announced Korean Season 4. The American version was a separate reported project, not Season 4; as of August 12, 2026, it is reportedly shelved, but Netflix has not officially confirmed its cancellation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most defensible conclusion is therefore: the story of Gi-hun has ended, the American spinoff appears to be dead for now, and the wider Squid Game brand remains active through reality television, games and merchandise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Squid Game Season 4 happening?
No. Netflix described Season 3 as the Korean series’ third and final season, and no Korean Season 4 has been announced. The American project discussed in reports was a separate English-language version, not Season 4 of the original drama.
Was the American version of Squid Game officially canceled?
The latest secondary reporting located for this update says the David Fincher-associated American project is no longer moving forward at Netflix. However, Netflix has not publicly confirmed the cancellation, so “reportedly scrapped” or “apparently shelved” is more accurate than stating it as an official cancellation.
Does the Season 3 ending set up Season 4?
No. The Season 3 finale includes an American-facing recruiter sequence, which leaves room for a broader story, but that tease is not a Netflix order. It suggests franchise potential rather than confirming a fourth Korean season.
What is still continuing after Squid Game Season 3?
Squid Game: The Challenge is a separate unscripted reality competition, while Squid Game: Unleashed is an official game. Neither is a scripted continuation of Gi-hun’s story.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: There is no announced Squid Game Season 4. Netflix called Season 3 the final season of the Korean drama. The separate American project linked to David Fincher was reportedly scrapped in August 2026, but Netflix has not issued an official cancellation statement. The Challenge, Unleashed and licensed merchandise remain active parts of the franchise.
