Squid Game is not based on a true story. Its deadly competition, contestants and organizers are fictional. The series is instead shaped by real economic hardship, Korean childhood culture and a documented labor conflict: the 2009 SsangYong Motor strike.
No. Squid Game is not based on a true story, and no real group of people was forced to play its deadly games. Netflix’s drama is a scripted thriller created, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The contestants, masked organizers, island compound, cash prize and killings are fictional.
What is real is the social pressure behind the story. Hwang drew on his own financial hardship, the global financial crisis, widening inequality, Korean childhood games and specific labor conflicts in South Korea. The clearest connection to a documented violent event is the 2009 SsangYong Motor strike, which helped inform protagonist Seong Gi-hun’s history as a laid-off automobile worker. It did not become the show’s deadly competition.
That distinction matters because several viral posts have attached Squid Game to real South Korean abuses, particularly the Brothers’ Home detention facility, or to an alleged 1986 underground death game. Those claims go beyond the available evidence.

What is fictional in Squid Game?
The central premise is invented: hundreds of people in severe financial difficulty agree to compete in familiar children’s games for a large cash prize, while losing contestants are killed. The show then places that contest inside a secret facility controlled by wealthy spectators and masked staff.
There is no reliable evidence that such a competition took place. The contestants’ individual problems—debt, failed businesses, medical bills, gambling losses, precarious work and family responsibilities—reflect recognizable economic circumstances, but the characters and their participation in the contest are fictional creations.
Netflix describes the program as a scripted thriller/drama, not as a dramatization of a historical case. The main scripted series concludes with its third season; that should not be confused with the separate reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, licensed merchandise, non-lethal fan experiences or the official mobile game Squid Game: Unleashed.
Why did Hwang Dong-hyuk create the story?
Hwang’s own financial hardship
Hwang has explained that he developed the idea while experiencing serious financial difficulty. His mother had retired, and he was the family’s primary earner. He originally wrote the project as a feature-film screenplay in 2009, but investors and producers considered its premise too extreme or difficult to sell. Netflix eventually developed it as a series, with production moving forward in 2019.

The characters are not simply greedy contestants chasing easy money; many are portrayed as people whose debts and obligations have narrowed their choices. Hwang’s circumstances influenced the story’s emotional and economic concerns, but they do not mean that the plot happened to him or to anyone else.
The financial crisis and widening inequality
The original concept was influenced by the global financial crisis and the widening gap between wealthy and poor people. Hwang has also said that the social climate surrounding the COVID-19 era made the show’s once-extreme premise feel more familiar. In his interpretation, modern society pushes people into relentless competition and encourages them to measure survival and success in material terms.

That is the show’s real-world foundation: not a hidden death match, but a social system in which unemployment, debt, medical expenses and insecure work can make desperate decisions appear rational. The competition is an exaggerated metaphor for that pressure.
Did Squid Game copy Battle Royale or Liar Game?
Hwang has credited Japanese comics and animation, including Battle Royale and Liar Game, as influences while developing the screenplay. Both belong to the broader survival-game tradition in which participants are placed under extreme rules and forced to make morally difficult choices.
Recommended Free Tools
Influence is not the same as adaptation. Hwang did not present Squid Game as a direct remake of either work. He combined survival-fiction conventions with Korean childhood games, Korean social references and his own concerns about economic insecurity. The result uses a familiar genre framework but gives it a different setting, visual language and social argument.
Readers interested in those acknowledged influences may want to explore Battle Royale manga and Liar Game manga. They are best understood as part of the creative context around the series—not as evidence that the Netflix plot is a disguised historical account.
Are the games in Squid Game real?
The games are real or culturally recognizable; the lethal rules are not. Hwang selected activities familiar from childhood and transformed them into fictional survival tests. That contrast is one of the show’s central devices: colorful, simple games become terrifying when the consequences are changed.
Squid Game
The title game is a real Korean children’s game. It is played on a court shaped like a squid, with attacking and defending sides. Traditionally, it is a physical contest, not a lethal one. Hwang played it as a child and chose it partly because its aggressive movement and unusual shape could symbolize the society represented in the series.

Dalgona
Dalgona is a Korean sugar candy traditionally made with a stamped shape. Players try to remove the shape without breaking it. The series turns that delicate childhood challenge into a high-stakes test, but the candy tradition itself is real.

Anyone recreating the scene should treat it as a food activity, not as an official recreation of the show’s danger. A Squid Game dalgona candy kit can be a non-lethal way to try the candy-and-shape challenge, subject to checking the current seller, ingredients, food-safety information and delivery availability.
Other familiar games
Red light, green light, marbles, tug-of-war and the glass-bridge sequence draw on recognizable games or game-like mechanics. The show changes their meaning through surveillance, competition and punishment. Their cultural familiarity is part of the horror: viewers recognize the rules before the story reveals what the organizers have done to them.
The real event most clearly echoed by the show: the 2009 SsangYong Motor strike
The strongest documented connection between Squid Game and a real violent event is the 2009 labor dispute at SsangYong Motor in South Korea. Workers resisted mass layoffs during a period of severe economic stress, occupying the factory in a prolonged confrontation involving workers, company forces and police.
Reporting on Hwang’s comments has connected that conflict to Gi-hun’s backstory. Gi-hun is a former automobile worker who loses his job, experiences the collapse of his economic security and carries lasting trauma from the violence surrounding the dispute. The strike provides a real-world reference point for elements involving job loss, worker solidarity, police repression and the psychological effects of labor conflict.
But the scope of the connection must remain narrow. The SsangYong strike was not the origin of the entire series, and its workers did not participate in anything resembling the show’s contest. The island, masked staff, prize money, elimination system and murders are fictional inventions layered onto a story shaped by real economic and labor conditions.
Was Squid Game inspired by Brothers’ Home?
There is no reliable evidence that Brothers’ Home directly inspired Squid Game. Brothers’ Home was a real institution in Busan where vulnerable people were detained and abused under South Korea’s anti-vagrancy and social-purification policies. The country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission later confirmed hundreds of deaths connected to the facility, while survivors have continued to seek accountability.
The history is horrific and deserves independent attention. However, it should not be presented as the source of the Netflix series without evidence. Hwang has not identified Brothers’ Home as an inspiration.

The confusion appears to have spread through social-media posts combining a genuine historical photograph with colorful images said to show a “real Squid Game” compound. The colorful interior images were identified as AI-generated, not archival photographs of the institution.
There are broad thematic similarities—dehumanization, coercion, violence and vulnerable people trapped inside an abusive system—but the histories are fundamentally different. Brothers’ Home victims were detained without the meaningful choice presented to the show’s contestants, and the institution did not operate as a competition offering a cash reward. Equating the two can trivialize survivors’ experiences and obscure the documented history of state-linked abuse.
What about the claim that a real death game happened in 1986?
The claim that Squid Game was based on a 1986 underground facility or a real death game is not supported by the documented account of the series’ development. It belongs to the same category as the viral Brothers’ Home claim: a dramatic internet story that mixes real historical suffering, unverified details and misleading imagery.
The evidence supports a more specific explanation. Hwang began the project in 2009; he drew on financial hardship, inequality, survival fiction and Korean games; and the SsangYong dispute informed aspects of Gi-hun’s backstory. None of that establishes a real 1986 competition or a hidden facility modeled on the show.

Can fans play a real Squid Game?
Fans can buy or play non-lethal licensed products, but no safe product reproduces the show’s fictional violence—and none should suggest that it does. Netflix’s franchise includes merchandise, fan experiences, the reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge and the mobile game Squid Game: Unleashed.
For a physical tabletop option, the Squid Games 100 card game is a franchise product identified in Funko’s official instructions. It belongs in the category of ordinary entertainment products, not historical evidence or a recreation of the drama’s lethal rules. A more specialized option for hobbyists is the licensed Zombicide Squid Game expansion, documented by Asmodee and designed for players already interested in the Zombicide board-game system.
The accurate answer in one sentence
Squid Game is fictional, but it uses real Korean games and real social anxieties—and it echoes the 2009 SsangYong Motor labor conflict in Gi-hun’s backstory—rather than retelling one violent real event.
