Yes—Spotify is still listed as compatible with PS4 by Spotify and PlayStation. A loading screen, crash, sign-in loop, missing app, or playback failure can instead point to PSN status, network access, a stale account link, damaged app data, or a PS4 database problem. Work through these nine fixes from least to most disruptive, and do not initialize the console unless you have backed up your data and exhausted safer options.
Spotify availability and catalogs vary by country. If the service is unavailable in your region, local troubleshooting cannot add it.
Start with the symptom
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| Loading screen or immediate return to the home screen | Check service status, power-cycle, update, then reinstall |
| Login loop or authentication error | Sign out of PSN, then unlink and relink Spotify |
| App opens but music will not start | Test the network, try another title, and use Spotify Connect |
| Spotify is missing or the Store says it is installed | Check Library and downloads, restart, then reinstall or rebuild the database |
| Other PS4 apps also fail | Investigate PSN, system software, storage, or hardware rather than Spotify alone |
1. Check PlayStation’s live service status
On a phone or computer, open the PlayStation Service Status page. Look for incidents affecting account management, gaming and social, the PlayStation Store, or other PlayStation Network services. Record when you checked: status pages change.
If there is an outage, wait for Sony to restore it instead of repeatedly reinstalling Spotify. A PSN or account-management outage can block loading and sign-in even when your internet connection is fine.

2. Test the PS4’s internet connection
- On the PS4, open Settings > Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
- Confirm both internet access and PlayStation Network sign-in.
- If the test fails, restart the router. If possible, connect the PS4 by Ethernet as a comparison with Wi-Fi.
A successful test proves basic console connectivity, not that Spotify’s authentication or content service is reachable. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance uses this network-test path and recommends a wired connection when connectivity or update problems persist (application troubleshooting).
3. Fully power-cycle the PS4
- Close Spotify and choose Power > Turn Off PS4.
- Wait until the console is completely off, not in Rest Mode.
- Unplug its power cable briefly.
- Reconnect it, start the PS4, and try Spotify.
This is a restart procedure for a temporarily hung system; PS4 has no standard “clear Spotify cache” menu. Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance recommends powering off and unplugging the console (Spotify Community guidance).
4. Update PS4 system software and Spotify
Update the console
- Go to Settings > System Software Update.
- Install any available update, restart, and test Spotify.
Keep the PS4 current using Sony’s PS4 system-software instructions.

Update the app
- Highlight Spotify on the home screen.
- Press OPTIONS.
- Select Check for Update if it appears.
If a system update is stuck, open Notifications, highlight the update, choose OPTIONS > Delete, then retry Settings > System Software Update.
5. Sign out of PSN, then sign back in
- Open Settings > Account Management > Sign Out. Older firmware or regions may label this area PlayStation Network/Account Management.
- Restart the PS4.
- Sign in again and launch Spotify.
This refreshes a stale PSN session that can interfere with linked services. The sign-out step is included in Spotify’s PlayStation troubleshooting guidance (source).
6. Log out of Spotify and relink the account
When Spotify opens but hangs during authentication or returns to the login screen, refresh the link.

- Open Spotify directly on the PS4 and choose Log Out from the account/profile area.
- Sign in with your Spotify email and password, Spotify Connect, or Log In With PIN. For the PIN method, open www.spotify.com/pair on another device and enter the displayed code.
- If in-app logout fails, use the PS4 path Settings > Account Management > Linked Services > Spotify > Unlink Account.
- Restart the PS4 and link Spotify again.
Spotify explains that signing in on PlayStation links the Spotify and PSN accounts (Spotify’s PlayStation instructions). Menu wording varies by firmware and region; Settings > Users and Accounts > Link Services is a PS5-style path, not the standard PS4 route.
7. Delete and reinstall Spotify
Use this for crashes, a broken launch, or an app that appears installed but will not open.

- Open PlayStation Store, search for Spotify, and download it again.
Deleting the application does not delete your Spotify account or playlists, although local app state may not be preserved. Spotify recommends this reinstall procedure (guidance), and PlayStation documents the Store download path (setup page).

If the Store says Spotify is already installed while it is missing, restart, check Library and Notifications/Downloads, and temporarily disconnect external USB storage before trying again. This storage workaround is community-reported, not a guaranteed Sony procedure. If downloads remain inconsistent, proceed to database rebuilding.

Try this after reinstalling if Spotify still crashes, disappears, or triggers application/database errors.
- Turn the PS4 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 with a USB cable.
- Select Rebuild Database and let the process finish without interruption.
Sony describes this as creating a new content database for application, download, and database problems (application troubleshooting; error-code guidance). It is not the same as initializing the PS4 and should not erase your games or saves, but it can take time. Repeated corruption or failures in several apps may indicate a failing drive or broader system fault.

9. Use Spotify Connect, then escalate if necessary
Control the PS4 from another device
- Open Spotify on a phone or tablet.
- Put the phone and PS4 on the same local network.
- Open Spotify’s device picker and select the PS4.
- Use the phone to start and control playback.
Spotify Connect is a workaround, not a repair. If the PS4 does not appear, launch Spotify on the console first, restart both devices, temporarily disable a phone VPN, and try another network. These are diagnostic steps; the official requirement is that the devices share a network (Spotify; PlayStation).
Know when the fault is bigger than Spotify
Contact PlayStation Support if several apps fail, the Store or PSN is inaccessible, rebuilding the database changes nothing, the console reports drive or system-software errors, or Spotify repeatedly fails to install.
Before considering a system reinstallation
Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) is a last resort. Sony warns that it deletes console data. Back up saved data first and try the non-destructive steps above; a factory-style reset is not a quick Spotify fix (Sony’s system-software page). If normal updating fails, Sony’s Safe Mode instructions cover a manual USB update using a FAT32 or exFAT drive, the folder structure PS4/UPDATE/, and the filename PS4UPDATE.PUP (Safe Mode instructions).
What to record for support
- Any error code and the exact screen or message.
- Whether other PS4 apps and the PlayStation Store work.
- Whether Spotify works on another device with the same account.
- The steps that reproduce the failure.
- The approximate date and time it occurred.
Those details help support distinguish an outage, account-link issue, app corruption, network fault, or failing console.
