Spartacus: House of Ashur has not been renewed for Season 2. Starz canceled the series on May 22, 2026, despite creator Steven S. DeKnight saying earlier that a second season had been written. TV Insider reported that Lionsgate Television was shopping the series to other platforms, but no new home or Season 2 order is confirmed in the reports available.
What happened to Spartacus: House of Ashur Season 2?
The status changed between two TV Insider reports. On February 6, 2026, creator and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight said Season 2 had been written and that he was waiting for approval to move ahead. On May 22, TV Insider reported that Starz had canceled the series after one season.

TV Insider also reported that Lionsgate Television, the studio behind the show, was shopping it to other platforms after Starz and Lionsgate ended their partnership in 2025. That is an effort to find another outlet, not confirmation that one has agreed to produce the series. No pickup or second-season order is established by these reports.
What did the hopeful update actually mean?
In his February interview, DeKnight said, “I’m feeling pretty confident. Worldwide, the show seems to be doing very well, so we’re just waiting for the green light.” He added that the cast and crew were eager to return to New Zealand to shoot the next chapter.

That was DeKnight’s optimistic assessment, not a renewal announcement or a published audience measurement. Having scripts written meant the story was prepared to continue; it did not mean Starz had approved production. The later cancellation report made that distinction consequential.
How did the finale rewrite history?
At the end of Season 1, Ashur kills Julius Caesar and says “Hail Caesar” over his body. This alternate-history turn set up a planned second season shaped by the consequences of Caesar’s death.
DeKnight said Ashur would try to keep the killing secret, while Cornelia’s suspicion about her husband’s disappearance could become part of the story. He also discussed possible developments involving Korris and Servius. These were directions for a written but unproduced season, not events that have been filmed or released.
DeKnight summarized Ashur’s changed role this way: “Ashur becomes, I won’t say the hero, but definitely the protagonist.” The distinction captures the series’ premise: it shifts the familiar historical frame by putting Ashur at the center of events.
