DreamWorks describes him as “a lovable curmudgeonly ogre,” and its official synopsis for Shrek Forever After calls him a “real ogre.”
Why Shrek is an ogre
DreamWorks’ own About page identifies Shrek as an ogre. The studio’s official synopsis for Shrek Forever After reinforces the classification: Shrek longs to be a “real ogre.” That wording makes his kind explicit; it is not an inference from his appearance or behavior.

Why people may confuse ogres and trolls
DreamWorks mentions both kinds of characters on its About page, but in separate descriptions. It calls Shrek an ogre and describes a character associated with the separate Trolls franchise as “an overly optimistic pink-haired troll.” The studio does not use “troll” as another name for Shrek.
Which Shrek are we talking about?
This identification applies to the character in DreamWorks’ Shrek films. The original Shrek was released in 2001; DreamWorks lists its runtime as 90 minutes on the film page.
