No blanket ban on Pokémon as a franchise is supported by the available official evidence. The Pokémon Company’s mainland China subsidiary describes licensed products and media there, including a simplified-Chinese Pokémon Trading Card Game. That does not establish that every Pokémon game is available: the current mainland status of Pokémon GO is not confirmed by the official sources cited here.

What “banned in China” means here

This answer concerns mainland China, not Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. It also distinguishes the Pokémon franchise from an individual game or online service: evidence that Pokémon cards or licensed media operate in mainland China does not prove that a particular app is approved or playable there.

The official overview of 宝可梦(上海)玩具有限公司, The Pokémon Company’s mainland subsidiary, describes licensed business and entertainment activity, as well as plans to develop games for China-compatible platforms. The company says its simplified-Chinese Pokémon Trading Card Game reached mainland China in 2022. This documented presence weighs against a blanket franchise-wide prohibition, but it is not a guarantee that every title or product is available.

Is Pokémon GO banned or playable in mainland China?

The official sources cited here do not establish Pokémon GO’s current mainland availability or confirm a formal government ban on the app. The game’s official page’s language information does not answer whether it is available or lawful in mainland China.

China’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) maintains an imported online-game approval index. The index is relevant to the approval of individual online games, but it does not, by itself, determine whether Pokémon GO is approved, blocked, or formally banned. An absent or inconclusive listing should not be treated as proof of a ban.

What is documented about Pokémon cards and other licensed activity?

The mainland Pokémon website continues to publish card-game rules and competitive-format updates. Its notice dated June 27, 2026, scheduled a Standard-format rotation for July 16, 2026; its rules page was updated September 16, 2026. These are signs of an active mainland card-game operation, not evidence that every international Pokémon product is sold there.

The subsidiary’s overview also describes licensed products, animation broadcasts and film releases. Those activities show that Pokémon has a licensed presence in mainland China; they do not answer the separate question of whether a specific online game is accessible.

Does the Chinese court case mean Pokémon was banned?

No. A court case involving Pokémon concerned alleged copying of the franchise by a game operator, not an order banning Pokémon. The Supreme People’s Court’s English-language news site reported that the Guangdong High People’s Court mediated a copyright and unfair-competition dispute between The Pokémon Company and four Chinese gaming companies in February 2025.

In its April 27, 2025 report, the court news site said the first-instance court had ordered compensation of 107 million yuan. It also reported that the defendant game had generated more than 300 million yuan (US$41.172 million) by the following year. These are figures attributed to that court report, not measures of Pokémon’s overall sales or market presence.

Guangdong High People’s Court president Zhang Haibo described it as “the first intellectual property right protection case involving the globally renowned game and animation IP Pokémon in China.” The reported subject was intellectual-property enforcement—protecting Pokémon rights against alleged copying—not a prohibition on the franchise.
