Short answer: The original ShowBox piracy ecosystem was heavily disrupted by copyright litigation and related enforcement, but the available record does not verify that every app, website, mirror, or clone using the ShowBox name was permanently shut down. The distinction matters: an inaccessible domain or broken APK is not proof of a permanent court-ordered closure.
This is also separate from a 2025–2026 lawsuit involving a company called Showbox Corp. That case concerns enforcement of a commercial arbitration award, not a shutdown of the streaming app.
What does “ShowBox” mean?
ShowBox was the name associated with an unauthorized movie- and television-streaming app. Over time, the name also appeared on APK download pages, websites, mirrors, and third-party media add-ons. These may not have shared an operator, source code, or relationship to the original app.
That makes “ShowBox is shut down” imprecise unless it identifies what is meant: the original app, a particular domain, a source service, or a later clone. The name also belongs to legitimate businesses, including South Korea’s Showbox Corp.; the shared name alone does not connect those companies to the piracy app.

What did the ShowBox-related litigation establish?
The Hawaii domain litigation
In Venice PI, LLC v. Galbatross Technologies, LLP, plaintiffs alleged that defendants promoted the Show Box app as a way to view copyrighted material and sought registrar-related relief involving numerous domains associated with ShowBox and related services. The court record documents the litigation and requested relief; it does not establish that every domain on a litigated list was permanently disabled or controlled by the same operators. Read the Hawaii court record.
The 2019 copyright complaint
A complaint filed on April 3, 2019 alleged that Show Box software connected users to unauthorized streaming and torrent sources and facilitated infringement. Those are allegations made by plaintiffs, not findings against every person or service that later used the ShowBox name. Read the complaint.

Together, these records show that ShowBox-associated services and domains faced meaningful legal pressure. They do not amount to a single verified announcement that all ShowBox-branded services were permanently closed.
Why did the original ecosystem disappear?
Litigation and enforcement appear to have been major pressures, but the evidence does not establish one lawsuit as the cause of every outage or disappearance. Piracy services can also lose hosting, have domains suspended, be abandoned by operators, stop receiving updates, or become inaccessible when their source links fail. Meanwhile, mirrors and unaffiliated clones can make a service appear to return under the same name.

“Permanently shut down” can refer to very different outcomes: an app no longer works, a domain no longer resolves, updates have stopped, a host has removed a service, operators have abandoned a brand, or a court has entered a permanent injunction. A failed website or nonfunctional APK demonstrates unavailability at that moment; by itself, it does not prove a permanent legal closure.
The 2025–2026 Showbox Corp. case is a different dispute
The federal case Showbox Corp. v. Maum Studio Inc. names Showbox Corp. and Orion Holdings Corp. as petitioners and Maum Studio Inc. as respondent. Filed in September 2025, it sought enforcement of a foreign arbitration award under the New York Convention; it was not a copyright case against the streaming app. View the case docket.

A court order dated April 30, 2026 recommended recognition and enforcement of the award, followed by a judgment in May and an amended judgment in June 2026. That commercial proceeding is not evidence that a court ordered a ShowBox streaming APK offline. Read the April 30 order and the June 17 amended judgment.
Are current ShowBox APKs official or safe?
A download page calling itself the “official new ShowBox” is not proof that it is operated by the original developers. The available information does not establish that every current APK bearing the name contains malware, but anonymous, outdated, or repackaged downloads have uncertain provenance and can expose users to malicious software or credential theft. Do not install one unless the publisher and rights to the content can be independently verified.

What are the legal risks for viewers?
The U.S. litigation described above primarily targeted operators, promoters, source repositories, and related service providers. An app operator’s legal exposure is not the same as an individual viewer’s. Streaming, downloading, and uploading or torrenting can involve different conduct, and the legal analysis depends on the jurisdiction and facts. A reader’s exposure may depend on what they accessed, downloaded, uploaded, or shared and where they live; this is general information, not individualized legal advice.
Where to watch films and shows legally
Licensed options include subscription services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Max; free, ad-supported services such as Tubi and Pluto TV; and individual rentals or purchases through Prime Video or Apple TV. Library access may be available through Kanopy or Hoopla, depending on local eligibility.
Catalogs, pricing, and availability vary by country and change over time, so check each service’s official site. No licensed provider is a one-for-one replacement for ShowBox’s unauthorized aggregation model.
For context, the U.S. Department of Justice announced domain seizures in 2026 involving unauthorized streams of World Cup matches. Those actions show a broader enforcement environment, but the announcements do not identify those seized domains as ShowBox domains: June announcement and July announcement.
