Netflix is re-testing limited free trials in some markets, but it has not announced a permanent free subscription plan. The company says the trial test excludes the United States and United Kingdom, and it has not named the other markets or disclosed eligibility rules. That is different from a free, ad-supported membership available on an ongoing basis.
What Netflix confirmed about free trials
In its July 16, 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix said it had begun re-testing free trials for “non-rejoining new members” in a number of markets, excluding the United States and United Kingdom. The letter does not identify the participating markets, trial length, signup or payment requirements, or who qualifies. Netflix’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter is the primary confirmation.
The wording describes a limited acquisition test, not existing subscribers being moved to a free plan. Netflix’s Help Center says it generally does not offer free trials, so the shareholder-letter statement points to a selective re-test rather than a return to a standard offer for everyone. Eligibility and terms may depend on the offer a person sees in their market.
How a free trial differs from a permanent free plan
| Question | Limited free trial | Permanent free tier |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Temporary offer | Ongoing membership tier |
| Who gets access? | Eligible users in unspecified test markets | Would depend on announced market and eligibility rules; none have been disclosed |
| Likely business role | Encourage eligible viewers to try Netflix and potentially become paying members | Could rely on advertising, paid-plan conversion, or both; Netflix has not announced its model |
| Confirmed by Netflix? | Yes, as a re-test for non-rejoining new members | No |
| Countries and catalog | Not stated in the shareholder letter | Not stated; no permanent tier has been announced |
Do not assume a trial is automatically available to every new customer, lasts a particular number of days, or has no signup conditions. Netflix has not published those details for this re-test.

Is Netflix considering an ad-supported free tier?
There is no public confirmation of a launch, date, country list, product name, or catalog. Secondary reporting says Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters discussed the advertising scale a country would need to support a free offering. That comment suggests the economics may be under consideration; it is not a product announcement. Cord Cutters News’ report is secondary coverage.
A free tier could make commercial sense in some places if advertising revenue and later paid-plan conversions cover the costs of content, delivery, and support. But those are possible business rationales, not Netflix commitments. The economics could also be weakened if viewers move down from paid plans, advertising demand is limited, content rights restrict ad-supported use, or local rules constrain ad formats.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
These considerations help explain why any future offer might be market-specific. Advertising demand and rates, local ad-buying infrastructure, content rights, payment access, competition from free television or streaming, data costs, language needs, and regulation all vary by country. Netflix has not said which markets, if any, meet its threshold for a permanent free tier.
What Netflix offers now: a paid plan with ads
Netflix’s existing ad-supported experience is a lower-priced paid plan in markets where it is available. It is not “free Netflix with ads.” Netflix’s Help Center overview of ads on Netflix says ads appear during most shows and movies on these plans. Some titles are unavailable because of licensing restrictions and are marked with a lock icon; ads generally cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded during playback. Availability also depends on country and compatible devices.

For a dated US reference only, Netflix’s Q1 2026 shareholder letter listed the ads plan at $8.99 per month in the United States. Netflix also reported that the plan accounted for more than 60% of sign-ups in its advertising countries during that quarter; that figure is not a global share of all Netflix sign-ups. Prices and plan availability can vary by market and change over time. See the Q1 2026 shareholder letter for those figures.
Netflix says its ads plan reaches more than 250 million global monthly active viewers. That is Netflix’s measure of viewers, not a count of paying subscribers. The company has also announced that the paid ads plan will expand to 15 countries in 2027. Neither the audience figure nor that expansion is evidence of a free membership launch. The announced markets are:

- A worldwide free-plan launch: Netflix has not announced one.
- A May 21, 2026 launch date: no official announcement supports that date. A May 2026 fact-check also found no official support for the claim of a worldwide free subscription. Fact Crescendo’s fact-check addresses the claim.
- Free-plan availability in the US or UK: both countries were excluded from the disclosed free-trial re-test; Netflix has not named permanent free-tier markets.
- The full catalog, a specific ad load, mobile-only access, or particular limits: none has been announced for a permanent free tier.
- The 15 expansion countries as free-plan markets: those are for the paid ads plan in 2027.
Check the plan options shown on Netflix’s official signup page for your country, and use Netflix’s Help Center for eligibility and device details. A plan’s country rules matter: Netflix says ad-supported access is tied to the country where the plan was started, and travel can lead to an unavailable-region message. A VPN is not a verified way to obtain a plan from another market; see Netflix’s guidance on ad-supported plans unavailable in a region.

If Netflix presents you with a trial, read its local terms rather than assuming it is universal or permanent. For a no-cost option, look at legal free ad-supported services, library streaming, or broadcaster catch-up services in your area; a bundle that includes Netflix may still require payment for mobile, broadband, or another service.
