No. Sheinelle Jones’s lengthy absence from Today was a leave that began in December 2024 and ended with her return on September 5, 2025. In January 2025, Jones said she was taking time away to deal with a “family health matter,” but did not identify who was affected or share further details. Later absences, including one reported for an Emmy assignment in 2026, were separate schedule events.
Why was Sheinelle Jones absent from Today?
On January 15, 2025, Jones said she was taking time away to deal with a family health matter. TheWrap reproduced her statement: “I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show. I want to share with you that I’m taking time to deal with a family health matter.” The statement did not identify the person affected or disclose a diagnosis. TheWrap’s January 15, 2025 report
In May 2025, Today announced the death of Jones’s husband, Uche Ojeh, after an illness, according to later return coverage. That later public context should not be confused with what Jones disclosed in January: her original statement did not name her husband or explain the matter further. TVLine’s September 2, 2025 report
When did Sheinelle Jones return to Today?
Jones returned on September 5, 2025, in a taped interview with Savannah Guthrie. The conversation addressed her husband’s death. TVLine reported the return date and interview context. TODAY’s verified channel later described Jones’s response to the support she received as “Overwhelmingly Kind.” TODAY’s return-interview description, published September 8, 2025

Is she still away from the show?
The extended leave ended with her September 2025 return. A 2026 profile from New York Women in Communications lists Jones as co-host of TODAY with Jenna and Sheinelle. That is evidence of her later role, but it does not establish her exact day-by-day schedule on October 8, 2026. New York Women in Communications’ 2026 profile

In September 2026, TV Insider reported that Jones would be away for an upcoming work assignment covering the Emmys from Los Angeles. That was a separate, assignment-related absence—not a continuation of the extended leave that ended in 2025. The report did not give a return date for that specific schedule absence.
