The cancellation claim came from an anonymous source in a March 2025 report, not an official studio announcement. On September 24, 2026, ComingSoon reported that a new team had been set, though it gave no release date or returning cast details.
What the 2025 cancellation report actually said
On March 17, 2025, Bloody Disgusting reported that a source it described as verified and close to the production called the project “totally dead” and said it had been over for “Almost a year now.” Those were the source’s words, not a statement from Lionsgate, Blumhouse, or the filmmakers. Bloody Disgusting’s March 2025 report
According to that anonymous source, the trouble began in January 2024, when producers started fighting: one wanted to move ahead while another created roadblocks, and Lionsgate lacked someone to resolve the disagreement. The report presented this as the source’s account; it did not establish an official cancellation decision.
The film had previously been scheduled for September 27, 2024, then moved to September 26, 2025. Those were historical dates reported in 2025, not a current release schedule.

What the writers said about the delay
In March 2025, screenwriter Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter, as relayed by ComingSoon and ComicBook.com, that he and co-writer Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft in spring 2024 and had heard little since. Melton characterized the delay as a management-level issue rather than a creative problem. His comments supported the account of a prolonged stall, but did not amount to an official cancellation announcement. ComingSoon’s report on Melton’s comments

Nelson directing, Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock writing, and James Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell producing. The project was described as continuing the franchise’s existing mythology, so the announcement does not establish that it is a reboot. ComingSoon’s September 2026 update

Wan said the original Saw was a defining experience and that he believed Nelson would honor its world with a distinctive approach. Nelson described the script as retaining the original’s mystery while exploring new ideas within the franchise’s “brutal moral compass.” These are statements about the project and its creative direction, not confirmations of a release date or cast.
As of that announcement, no theatrical release date or returning cast members had been announced. The 2026 update changes the status reported in 2025, but it does not establish when the film will be released or who will appear in it.
