Vance’s final case
TV Insider’s post-airing account reports that Vance discovers a bomb in NCIS’s evidence garage. He survives an initial shooting because he is wearing a vest, but is later shot without one and dies. A mysterious figure guiding him through the scene is revealed to be a younger Ducky, played by Adam Campbell.
The episode also resolves the threat to NCIS: according to TV Insider’s account of the fictional events, the agency’s shutdown is reversed after Vance’s death and the team’s actions.

Why did Rocky Carroll leave NCIS?
Carroll’s exit was not his choice, according to TV Insider. Showrunner Steven D. Binder presented him with a storyline in which the agency faced being folded into another agency, Vance uncovered the saboteur, and Vance died saving NCIS. After hearing the full plot, Carroll called it “a terrific story,” TV Insider reported.
Carroll had played Vance for 18 seasons, according to TV Insider. That is distinct from the show’s 23-season history reported by CBS News in 2026; the two figures describe Carroll’s tenure and the series’ run, respectively. CBS News’ March 2026 report on the show’s 500th episode also quoted longtime showrunner Steve Binder reflecting that the series could continue “as long as these actors wanna keep doing it.” That was Binder’s view, not a renewal promise.

Does Vance’s death mean Rocky Carroll can never return?
No such conclusion is established by the character’s death or Carroll’s departure from the regular cast. The available reports confirm the exit from the regular cast but do not establish whether Carroll might appear again in another capacity. CBS News interviewed Carroll the day after the episode aired; its report describes his portrayal of Vance as spanning nearly two decades.
