On the Line (2022), Romuald Boulanger’s thriller starring Mel Gibson, is built around a promising live-radio premise—but its reception suggests the twists and ending are the sticking points. In a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot checked October 8, 2026, it had a 17% Tomatometer from 23 critic reviews and a 28% Popcornmeter from 500+ audience ratings. Those low scores point to a divided response, not a verdict on whether you personally will enjoy it.
What is On the Line about?
Gibson plays Elvis Cooney, a longtime overnight radio host whose show is losing ratings. A mysterious caller interrupts the broadcast and sets Elvis on a dangerous journey. That live-on-air setup gives the film a contained, high-pressure framework while keeping the caller’s identity and the story’s turns in play. Paramount Global Content’s synopsis describes the premise without spelling out later plot developments.
The film was directed by Romuald Boulanger and premiered November 4, 2022. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 1 hour 44 minute runtime and an R rating for some violent content and language throughout. This is the Mel Gibson thriller, not another film with the same title. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page and Apple TV’s US listing identify the same 2022 title.

What do critics object to?
Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus recognizes the premise but faults the execution: “On the Line starts with a solid concept, but it’s quickly undone by a story that stumbles over its own twists on the way to a disaster of an ending.” In other words, the live-radio hook may draw viewers in, while the payoff is the chief concern in the aggregate summary.
Individual excerpts show that critical response was not uniform. Tim Cogshell of FilmWeek (LAist), in a November 30, 2022 review excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, called it “a really good Mel Gibson film.” Jake Wilson of The Age rated it 1.5/5 on November 17, 2022; the excerpt says Gibson’s curmudgeonly persona leaves limited room to modulate. So, is On the Line worth watching?
It may suit viewers drawn to a tense, contained thriller premise and willing to accept a payoff that critics have singled out as a weakness. If satisfying twists and a convincing ending are essential to your enjoyment, the low scores and consensus warning are good reasons to be cautious. The ratings support neither a universal recommendation nor a claim that the film has no appeal; they signal that the concept and the execution may land differently for different viewers.
