Yes—but only in one important sense. NORAD Tracks Santa is a real annual holiday program supported by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Its website, volunteers, phone service and seasonal tracker genuinely exist. But the Santa shown on the map is part of a coordinated Christmas story and entertainment experience—not scientific evidence that NORAD has verified Santa Claus as a real person or aircraft.
What NORAD Tracks Santa really is
NORAD Tracks Santa is a recurring public-outreach program associated with the binational U.S.-Canadian defense organization NORAD. Around Christmas, NORAD and its contributors publish a Santa-tracking experience through the official NORAD Santa website, mobile applications when available, social-media channels, telephone services and selected partner platforms.
The operation is staffed by a mixture of military personnel, Canadian and U.S. personnel, Department of Defense civilians, community participants and volunteers. The official Santa site says that more than 1,000 people may participate, although staffing and features can vary from year to year.

NORAD itself is real. Its everyday responsibilities include aerospace warning and aerospace control: monitoring activity in and around North American airspace. The Santa program borrows the language and imagery of that mission to create a playful Christmas Eve tradition.

Is NORAD actually tracking Santa?
NORAD tracks and reports a simulated Santa journey as part of its holiday program. That is different from independently detecting and scientifically verifying Santa Claus.
NORAD’s official materials describe the experience using familiar defense technologies, including radar, satellites and aircraft. The program also uses maps, videos, narration, Santa imagery, games and human responses to present an evolving Christmas Eve route. NORAD has described the North Warning System and other radar resources as part of the tracking framework, while satellites and aircraft appear in the holiday explanation.
Those statements should be understood in context. The public tracker does not give viewers raw sensor data that they can independently audit, nor does a location displayed on the website establish that a supernatural figure is physically present there. A report such as “Santa is over a particular location” is tracker output within a holiday narrative.

- On December 24, 1955, a Sears advertisement invited children to telephone Santa.
- The number printed in the advertisement was incorrect, according to the standard official account.
- Calls reached the Continental Air Defense Command, or CONAD, rather than the intended Santa line.
- Air Force Col. Harry Shoup, the officer on duty, decided to play along and provide Santa’s supposed location.
- CONAD personnel continued answering children’s calls with updates about Santa.
- When NORAD was created in 1958, it inherited and continued the tradition.
NORAD’s official history and the U.S. Department of Defense’s historical account identify the 1955 telephone incident and Col. Shoup’s response as the beginning of the tradition.
Was it a misprint, a misdial or a red phone?
The core story is well established: a wrong-number incident involving a Sears advertisement connected children with CONAD, and personnel responded by giving Santa updates. The smaller details are less certain and vary between retellings.
Some versions say the newspaper advertisement contained a misprinted number. Others describe a child misdialing the number. Popular accounts also say the call reached a red emergency telephone. Those details should not be presented as unquestionable facts. Official and historical retellings differ over the exact telephone equipment and the precise mechanism by which the call reached CONAD.
The safest conclusion is that a 1955 Sears-related wrong-number incident inspired CONAD’s Santa updates. The tradition’s historical reality does not depend on proving the “red phone” version.
Why would a defense command track Santa?
The answer is partly practical and partly cultural. CONAD and NORAD already had public-facing roles connected with watching the skies. The Santa story gave personnel a friendly way to respond to children during the holiday season, and the improvised response became an enduring tradition.

The result is neither an ordinary military operation nor a random unofficial website: it is a genuine seasonal program built around a fictional Christmas character.

Families should begin with the official domain: noradsanta.org. NORAD’s main website also links to its Santa materials at norad.mil.
Available features can change each year. Depending on the season, people may find:
- A countdown, games and North Pole content before Christmas Eve.
- Live or near-live route updates on December 24.
- Videos, stories and location information.
- Mobile apps listed through official Apple or Google app-store links.
- Telephone updates using 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723), when confirmed for that year.
- Integrations with services such as voice assistants, vehicle systems or audio platforms, depending on current partnerships.
Because this article is being prepared in 2026, readers should check NORAD’s official announcement for the current Christmas season before relying on phone hours, app names, languages or partner services. Details announced for the 2025 70th-anniversary program should not automatically be treated as confirmed 2026 features.

What if the phone line is busy?
High call volumes can produce busy signals, recordings or delays. NORAD has previously warned that not every caller will immediately reach a live operator. The website or official app may be more practical, especially for families outside North America or callers dealing with time-zone and carrier limitations.
Traditional online access has generally been free, but telephone, text-message, mobile-data and third-party service charges can depend on the caller’s carrier, location and platform. Check current terms before using external integrations.
Is the website safe and official?
The safest route is to type noradsanta.org directly or follow a link from NORAD’s main website. Check the spelling carefully: unofficial sites and applications may imitate the tracker without being affiliated with NORAD.
App availability, partner integrations and privacy terms can change. Parents should review an app’s permissions and any external service’s policies before allowing children to use it, and should avoid services that request unnecessary personal information.

What is not established by the program is the literal existence of Santa Claus. The most accurate way to describe NORAD Tracks Santa is as a playful holiday story built around a real military organization, real public-service personnel and the language of real aerospace surveillance.
