Yes, in part. Netflix says The Deliverance is drawn from LaToya Ammons’ story, involving a reported 2011 haunting in Gary, Indiana. But the film is a fictionalized dramatization: it changes the family and setting, reshapes key people and events, and does not establish that the reported experiences had a supernatural cause.
What is the real story behind The Deliverance?
The film’s inspiration is LaToya Ammons and the account of alleged paranormal events involving her family in Gary, Indiana. Netflix’s Tudum explainer says the end credits identify the movie as drawn from Ammons’ true story. Director Lee Daniels described the project as his interpretation of her life story; he said he spoke with Ammons once or twice early in the process. TIME’s account likewise characterizes the movie as a dramatization of the alleged 2011 haunting.

That wording matters: the reported haunting is an allegation, not a verified paranormal finding. TIME summarizes a 2014 Indianapolis Star investigation based on medical, psychological, and official records made available by Ammons. The coverage recounts claims and reports of agency and hospital involvement, but also skeptical psychological assessments and a child-welfare complaint. Those records do not settle a supernatural explanation.
What does the movie change?
The Deliverance centers on Ebony Jackson, played by Andra Day, rather than using Ammons’ name as its central character. TIME notes that the film relocates its fictional family to Pittsburgh, whereas the reported case was in Gary. The film also substantially reworks the people and events around the deliverance, or exorcism.

| Element | Reported Ammons account | Netflix film |
|---|---|---|
| Central mother | LaToya Ammons | Ebony Jackson, a fictionalized character played by Andra Day |
| Setting | Gary, Indiana | A Pittsburgh-based fictional family |
| Deliverance figure | TIME reports that Daniels said the real figure was a man. | The film changes the figure to a woman. |
| Deliverance events | A reported episode within a contested case account; the available reporting does not establish a paranormal cause. | A dramatic adaptation, not a documentary reconstruction. |
These distinctions are described in TIME’s comparison of the film with the reported case. Netflix’s official synopsis and cast listing identify the movie as a feature directed by Daniels and starring Day.
Does the film prove that the haunting happened?
No. The existence of reports, records, and people’s accounts is not proof that demons or paranormal forces caused the events. The reporting presents competing interpretations, including skeptical assessments. It is most accurate to say that the film takes inspiration from a real family’s reported experiences and then dramatizes them—not that it faithfully documents a proven haunting.
Why does the film emphasize faith?
Daniels has described faith as part of the story he wanted to tell, alongside fear. Netflix Tudum quotes him saying, “In the story, LaToya Ammons finds Jesus,” and Andra Day described the film as addressing family trauma, PTSD, and cyclical brokenness. That faith-centered perspective helps explain the movie’s approach, but it does not turn its deliverance scene into a factual record of the reported case.
