Running Point is fictional, not a biopic—but its lead character, Isla Gordon, is partly inspired by Los Angeles Lakers executive Jeanie Buss. The show borrows from Buss’s experiences in basketball leadership while inventing its team, family and storylines.
Who is Isla Gordon based on?
Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson, is partly inspired by Jeanie Buss and her experience leading a major Los Angeles basketball organization. Netflix describes Buss as the real-life inspiration behind Isla, and co-creator Ike Barinholtz said, “Jeanie’s story provided a rich foundation for the show.” (Netflix Tudum; Netflix Tudum interview)

That inspiration is not a one-to-one portrayal. Buss drew a clear distinction between herself and the character: “while we inspired so much of the story, these characters are not my family, and Isla Gordon is not me.” (TIME, Feb. 27, 2025)
What is real, and what is fictional?
| Element | What the show draws from | What viewers should understand |
|---|---|---|
| Isla’s leadership role | Buss’s experience as a woman in a senior role in professional basketball. | Isla is a fictional character, not a dramatized account of Buss’s life. (Netflix Tudum interview; TIME, Feb. 27, 2025) |
| The Los Angeles Waves | The show’s setting in professional basketball in Los Angeles. | The Waves are a fictional team, not the Lakers. ( Netflix Tudum) |
| The Gordon family and plot | Buss’s experiences helped provide background for the series. | The family and comedy-drama storylines are fictional, shaped with creative liberties. (Netflix Tudum season explainer; Los Angeles Times, Feb. 26, 2025) |
How closely was Jeanie Buss involved?
Buss is an executive producer, as is Lakers executive Linda Rambis. Netflix reports that Buss could watch cuts and give the creators feedback if something felt false. That input helped inform the production, but it does not turn the fictional plots into documented events. (Netflix Tudum)

The series’ development drew on Buss’s experiences: TIME reported that she pitched a show based on her time running the Lakers, while the writers researched her autobiography and spent time with Buss and Rambis. This background informed the fictional series rather than establishing that Isla’s particular experiences happened to Buss. (TIME, Feb. 27, 2025)
What real experience does the show reflect?
One theme Buss recognized was the pressure of being a woman in a male-dominated field. Discussing a scene in which Ali warns Isla that failure could set women back, Buss said: “That really was the pressure I felt taking this job because it’s such a male-dominated field.” (Netflix Tudum interview, Feb. 28, 2025)
Rank #2
That reflects a pressure Buss described; it is not evidence that the scene or the characters’ surrounding circumstances reproduce an event from her life.

Buss’s memoir, Laker Girl: My Life Making the Game, offers her perspective on her life and basketball career. TIME reports that the show’s writers consulted her autobiography. The book is background reading on Buss, not an official Running Point companion or tie-in. (TIME, Feb. 27, 2025; Amazon listing)
