Nintendo and Arad Productions are producing it, with Nintendo and Sony Pictures co-financing; Sony will distribute it in theaters worldwide. Netflix is named as its planned streaming home after the theatrical and home-entertainment windows.
Who is making and releasing the Zelda movie?
Nintendo announced the live-action film in 2023. Its current official title is The Legend of Zelda, and Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement sets a planned worldwide theatrical release for April 30, 2027. The release date is a plan and could change. Nintendo’s current announcement confirms the title, date and key roles.
| Role | Company or person |
|---|---|
| Production | Nintendo and Arad Productions |
| Financing | Nintendo and Sony Pictures co-finance the film; Nintendo says it provides more than half of the financing. |
| Worldwide theatrical distribution | Sony Pictures Entertainment |
| Planned later streaming window | Netflix, through Sony’s global Pay-1 agreement |
The production, financing and theatrical-distribution roles were set out in the 2023 project announcement and reaffirmed in Nintendo’s 2026 release.
What will Netflix’s role be?
Netflix is the announced later streaming destination, not the announced producer or theatrical distributor. In January 2026, Netflix and Sony announced a global Pay-1 arrangement covering Sony feature films after their full theatrical and home-entertainment runs. Netflix specifically listed Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda among the films covered by the deal. Netflix’s announcement says availability will roll out as rights in individual territories become available, with full global availability planned for early 2029.

What is confirmed about the film?
Nintendo describes the project as a live-action film based on its The Legend of Zelda action-adventure game series. The confirmed creative team and leads are:

- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- Director: Wes Ball
- Producers: Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad
- Zelda: Bo Bragason
- Link: Benjamin Evan Ainsworth
The official announcement does not reveal the plot or identify one particular game as the film’s source. It would be premature to describe the movie as an adaptation of a specific entry in the series.

No. A 2015 report described a possible Zelda television series associated with Netflix, but it did not become this film. Nintendo Life’s retrospective on the earlier report says neither company commented at the time and that nothing further came of the proposed series. The current project is an officially announced theatrical film with Nintendo, Arad Productions and Sony in the production and release roles.
