The Australian series follows Detective Jay Swan as he investigates two young men’s disappearance from an outback cattle station, and its prequel, Mystery Road: Origin, explores his earlier years. Whether it is “better than Yellowstone” is a matter of taste, not a ranking established by comparable evidence.
What is Mystery Road about?
ABC iview describes the original series’ opening case as the disappearance of two young men from an outback cattle station. Detective Jay Swan investigates alongside local cop Emma James; as they search for answers, the case points toward other crimes in a remote community. The premise makes the show a crime mystery first, with the landscape and community closely tied to the investigation. ABC iview and Acorn TV list the series.
Aaron Pedersen plays Jay Swan, and Acorn identifies Judy Davis as Emma James. ABC iview’s cast listing also includes Colin Friels, Deborah Mailman, Tasma Walton, Wayne Blair, Anthony Hayes, Madeleine Madden, Aaron McGrath, Meyne Wyatt, Ernie Dingo and John Waters.
How does it compare with Yellowstone?
The useful comparison is about what you want to watch, not which show wins an objective contest. The available information establishes Mystery Road’s outback setting and missing-person investigation; it does not establish a like-for-like comparison of awards, ratings, popularity or overall quality with Yellowstone.

#1 Best Overall
| If you want… | What Mystery Road offers |
|---|---|
| A crime-led story | A detective investigates the disappearance of two young men, with the case opening onto wider crimes in a remote community. |
| An Australian outback setting | The first case begins at a cattle station; ABC iview describes the series as crime and mystery drama. |
| A continuing central character | Jay Swan leads the original series, and Mystery Road: Origin follows his earlier years. |
If those are the elements you are looking for, Mystery Road could be a satisfying alternative. If your reason for watching Yellowstone is a different kind of story, the shared appeal of a remote setting alone may not make the shows interchangeable.
How many seasons are there, and where does Origin fit?
The original series
ABC iview and Acorn TV list two seasons of Mystery Road. Acorn lists six main episodes per season, plus bonus material. The episode titles are:
Rank #2
- Season 1: “Gone,” “Blood Ties,” “Chasing Ghosts,” “Silence,” “Waterhole” and “Truth.”
- Season 2: “The Road,” “The Flare,” “Artifacts,” “Broken,” “To Live with the Living” and “What You Do Now.”
The prequel
Mystery Road: Origin is a prequel about Jay Swan’s early years. ABC’s announcement places its story in 1999, when a young Constable Jay arrives at a new posting in a town where his estranged father lives and meets Mary. Mark Coles Smith plays Young Jay, and ABC iview lists two seasons of Origin. The prequel offers an entry into the character’s past; it is distinct from the original series’ two-season run. ABC’s announcement and the ABC iview listing give the premise and episode details.
