In August 2024, a Boston-area biological manufacturing company using the Black Mesa name said it was working to secure vaccine and other biological production—not on Half-Life 3, Project White Sands, or any other Valve title. The website clues that sparked speculation were not evidence of a Valve announcement.
Why did the Black Mesa website attract Half-Life 3 speculation?
In August 2024, visitors noticed changes to the BlackMesa.com site, including a changed header, a cipher and a countdown. Those details prompted fans to wonder whether the site was hinting at a new Half-Life game. Ars Technica reported that the domain had existed for years and that a company-branded page had appeared in 2022; the later website changes were interpreted as possible clues, not confirmation of a game reveal. Ars Technica’s August 2024 report describes the speculation and the company’s response.
What did the company say it does?
In its public statement, the Black Mesa team described itself as a real company in the Boston area working to “assure and secure vaccine and other biological manufacturing production.” That is the company’s own description of its work. It is not a Valve studio or a statement about the fictional research facility in the Half-Life universe. Black Mesa’s statement addressed the rumors directly.
What did the cipher reveal?
Ars Technica reported that the cipher led to a recruitment message seeking engineers, cybersecurity professionals and biologists. Rather than pointing to a game announcement, the puzzle was connected to the company’s hiring. The report also said the company thanked the community and joked about sending swag to the person who solved it.

What exactly did Black Mesa deny?
The company’s statement said: “We are not secretly working on Half Life 3, Project White Sands (whatever that is/may be) or any other Valve title – we’re just nerds working to secure the global bioeconomy.” The denial came from the Black Mesa team speaking for the company; it was not a Valve announcement.
Which “Black Mesa” is meant?
The name can refer to three different things: the Boston-area biological manufacturing company behind BlackMesa.com, the fictional Black Mesa Research Facility in the Half-Life setting, or Black Mesa, the separate game developed by Crowbar Collective. The website rumor concerned the company. Similar names do not establish a connection between that company and Valve or the game series.
