Spoilers for the ending of Moana 2. Yes: directors David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand confirm that Moana becomes a demigod at the end of the film. They connect the change to her growth, choices and sacrifice, but leave the exact meaning—and what abilities or limits come with it—unanswered.
Does Moana become a demigod at the end of Moana 2?
Yes. In a March 7, 2025 interview with Gizmodo / io9, directors Jason Hand and David Derrick Jr. confirm that Moana is a demigod by the film’s ending. This is not merely a fan interpretation of the final scene.

Hand puts the open question plainly: “We know that she has become a demigod. But what does that mean exactly?” Derrick says Moana’s new role is not fully known yet, adding, “But I love that we leave that door open.” The interview confirms her status, not a complete set of rules for what she can do or what the change will mean for her life.
How does the ending make Moana a demigod?
In the climax, Moana risks her life to break the curse on Motufetū. Maui calls on the gods and ancestors for help, and Moana returns changed. Derrick describes the moment as part of a story about her continuing evolution and growth; Hand says the filmmakers took time to make the relationship between Moana’s choices, her sacrifice and Maui’s role clear. Their account frames the transformation as earned through the story, rather than as a newly defined power system.

- Walt Disney Animation Studios? animated musical reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After hearing from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey into long-lost waters for an adventure. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The ending is designed to work both as the culmination of this film and as an opening onto questions the story has not answered. The filmmakers’ comments do not establish a planned sequel or specify what Moana’s powers will be.
What does Moana’s new tattoo mean?
The tattoo is intended to tell Moana’s story, not simply to make her look more like Maui. Writer-director Dana Ledoux Miller said the creative team worked with tatau consultant Peter Suluape on its design. Motufetū sits at the center, while the surrounding channels represent connections Moana helps restore among the peoples of the ocean. Miller described the design as “so specific to Moana and her story.”

That symbolism fits the film’s central mission: Moana seeks Motufetū, faces Nalo and works to reconnect ocean communities, as outlined in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ November 18, 2024 production notes. The tattoo reads as a visual record of that work and her relationships, rather than a decorative copy of Maui’s markings.
Does her new status replace her role as a wayfinder and leader?
No such replacement is established in the film’s stated story context. Co-writer and executive producer Jared Bush describes Moana as a wayfinder at the end of the first film; three years later, the sequel follows her as a leader taking responsibility for a crew and seeking to reconnect Pacific peoples. The demigod ending can therefore be read as another stage in her identity, not a sign that wayfinding or her human relationships no longer matter. Bush discusses the film’s development in The Walt Disney Company’s interview.

What the film’s cultural consultation does—and does not—tell us
Walt Disney Animation Studios says cultural experts advised the production in areas including anthropology, history, dance and movement, canoes and navigation, linguistics, and Pacific Island cultural practices. That is useful context for how the film was made, as described on the studio’s Moana 2 filmmaking-process page. It does not make Moana’s fictional demigod status evidence about real-world Pacific beliefs; the status and its still-undefined implications belong to the film’s story.
