Superman (2025) introduces Mister Terrific as Michael Holt, played by Edi Gathegi: a brilliant inventor and crime-fighting hero whose advanced technology makes him a capable partner to Superman. Calling him a “major part” describes his significance in the film’s hero ensemble—not an official billing category or a measured amount of screen time.
Who is Mister Terrific in Superman (2025)?
Mister Terrific is Michael Holt, a highly intelligent inventor who uses technology, athletic ability and fighting skill to help others. DC identifies Gathegi among the cast of James Gunn’s Superman. The film opened internationally beginning July 9, 2025, with its U.S. and IMAX release on July 11, according to DC’s film page.
The character has a long comic-book history: DC lists his first appearance in Sensation Comics #1 in 1942. In the comics, Holt founded a leading technology company, won an Olympic gold medal and redirected his life toward helping people after his wife died, according to DC’s Mister Terrific profile.
Why is Mister Terrific described as a major part?
His importance is best understood through his place in the ensemble and his partnership with Superman. Gathegi described the two as “brothers in fighting crime” and “brothers in being heroes,” while emphasizing that they do not have much in common. In his interpretation, Holt is more emotionally complicated and burdened than Superman’s comparatively straightforward idealist.

That description comes from Gathegi, not a stated explanation of the filmmakers’ intent. DC features Mister Terrific among the film’s characters, and Gathegi says he interacts with the main characters, but the available sources do not give a verified screen-time count or a specific statement from Gunn explaining why the character was included. “Major part” is therefore a useful description of his ensemble role, not a quantified claim.
What are Mister Terrific’s powers and gadgets?
In the comics, Holt’s strengths combine intellect and physical skill. DC lists genius-level intellect, advanced technology, gymnastics and fighting ability among his powers. His T-Spheres can handle tasks such as communication and holographic projection, as well as more aggressive functions. These are comic-character reference points; they do not guarantee that the film explains or uses every capability.

Gathegi says the movie includes the T-Spheres and adds film-specific equipment. He called one vehicle the T-Craft and tentatively referred to a body-responsive flying rig as the T-Rig. Because he described that latter name as uncertain, it should not be treated as definitive franchise terminology. His interview also notes that the costume stays close to the comics even as the film develops its own version of Holt.

The adaptation is selective rather than a complete retelling of Holt’s comic biography. Gathegi said the film does not cover much of the character’s comic backstory and that the filmmakers were “building our own version” and “taking liberties.” The movie’s emphasis, as he describes it, is on a distinct screen interpretation, its equipment and Holt’s relationship with Superman—not a promise to reproduce every detail of the comics.
