Mi Music appears to be a legitimate Xiaomi app, not malware—but it is not a privacy-minimal music player. Xiaomi’s disclosures describe collection of account and device identifiers, searches, playback activity, and technical data, with additional access tied to features such as song recognition, location-based radio, advertising, and cloud sync. The practical risk depends on how you use it: local playback with optional permissions denied exposes less than signing in, streaming, and syncing a library.
If you keep it, use the official app, turn off personalized recommendations, deny microphone and location access unless you need those features, and leave cloud sync off unless you want it. If you need a consistent cross-device streaming catalog, a dedicated service may fit better—but it will have its own account and data practices.
What Mi Music is—and why the answer varies by region
Mi Music is Xiaomi’s music app for playing audio stored on a phone, organizing a local library, and—in supported editions—accessing online music and other audio or video features. Depending on the phone, software version, and country, it may also offer lyrics, recommendations, radio, downloads, or paid features.

The name can refer to the preinstalled player on a Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone, or the Google Play app listed as Mi Music with package ID com.miui.player. These editions and their catalogs are not necessarily identical. Xiaomi says availability and service behavior can vary by model, app version, and region; a phone bought in one country may continue to use a different service edition after it is moved.

That distinction matters: a claim about the Play Store listing does not necessarily describe every system-integrated build or every online catalog. The app is useful as a local player even where its streaming offering is limited.
Is the official Mi Music app malware or spyware?
The official Google Play listing identifies Xiaomi as the developer. The sources reviewed do not establish that the official app is malware. That supports its legitimacy, but it does not prove that the app collects little data, has no vulnerabilities, or is suitable for every privacy-sensitive user.
Be especially cautious about modified APKs, cracked “VIP” versions, and copies from unofficial download sites. They are not equivalent to the official app and may have been altered. If you do not use Mi Music, disabling or uninstalling it through the phone’s normal app settings is safer than installing a replacement APK or modifying the phone’s bootloader.
“Spyware” is a stronger accusation than the evidence supports. Xiaomi’s own notice describes substantial data collection, but the reviewed material does not demonstrate covert surveillance. The more defensible concern is that the app’s data practices are broader than some users expect from a basic local player.
What data does Mi Music collect?
The following summarizes Xiaomi’s Mi Music privacy notice. These are Xiaomi’s published descriptions, not an independent measurement of current network traffic. What is collected can depend on the feature, region, edition, account settings, and app build.

These categories do not mean every user provides every data type. A local-only listener who denies optional permissions and does not sign in has a different exposure from someone using online recommendations, account sync, or song recognition. But fewer permissions do not prove that no technical or service data is processed.
Does Xiaomi share Mi Music data, and where is it stored?
Xiaomi says some services rely on third-party providers and that information may be shared with partners, affiliates, and service providers for functions such as delivering services, security, analytics, recommendations, or advertising. Xiaomi describes safeguards including encryption and data-processing agreements. Its support FAQ says Xiaomi does not sell personal information to third parties; that is not the same as saying no sharing takes place.
Storage location is less straightforward. The Mi Music-specific notice, dated May 27, 2022, says user information is stored in the People’s Republic of China and says online log information may be retained for one year for internet-security supervision requirements. Xiaomi’s newer general policies describe broader infrastructure: its U.S. policy, updated June 15, 2026, identifies data centers in the United States, Germany, and Singapore, while its general policy was updated July 31, 2026.
Those statements do not establish that every Mi Music user’s data is stored in one particular country. Storage and processing may depend on the account region, service edition, feature, and current backend configuration. The older app-specific notice is a meaningful transparency limitation; check the privacy notice shown in your installed app and your Xiaomi Account region rather than assuming either that all data is in China or that the newer general policy settles Mi Music’s exact storage location.
Is Mi Music secure?
Xiaomi’s Trust Center says Mi Music uses HTTPS/TLS 1.2 for data in transit and describes protections for certain identifiers and device or system information. The Google Play listing also reports encryption in transit and provides a way to request data deletion. These are useful disclosures, but they are not a full security audit. Google notes that Play Store data-safety information is supplied by the developer and can vary by region and use.

Encryption in transit does not establish that every locally stored file is encrypted at rest, that every third-party integration uses identical protections, or that Xiaomi cannot access cloud data. It also cannot rule out software vulnerabilities or account compromise. Use a strong, unique Xiaomi Account password and available account-security protections if you sign in, and treat cloud sync as a convenience with a privacy trade-off.
Mi Music permissions, explained by feature

Permission names and controls differ across Android, MIUI, HyperOS, and regional builds. A permission request can also be controlled by system software or device policy, not just the visible Mi Music app.
How to reduce Mi Music’s privacy footprint
- Turn off personalized recommendations. Xiaomi documents this route: Mi Music → General settings → Other → Recommendations → Off. Labels may differ by version. This is an opt-out from recommendations, not a promise to stop data needed for playback, security, diagnostics, billing, or legal compliance.
- Review permissions in App info. Xiaomi’s support instructions say to press and hold the app icon, tap App info, then open Permission management. Review microphone, location, music/audio or files, phone, notifications, and display-over-other-apps access. Deny what you do not use, then test playback.
- Disable the broader User Experience Program if you do not want to participate. Xiaomi documents Settings → Password and security → Privacy → User Experience Program, then turn off Enroll in User Experience Program. This controls a broader Xiaomi analytics program; it may not disable data flows Mi Music needs for services or account security.
- Leave cloud sync off unless you need it. Xiaomi says sync can involve music files, playlists, playback records, and account information. Before enabling it, decide whether cross-device convenience is worth that processing.
- Install only an official version. Use the Play Store listing or the update source provided by your device. Do not treat a repackaged or “unlocked” APK as trustworthy simply because it uses the same app name.
- Test changes one at a time. Denying microphone should affect song recognition, and denying location may affect localized radio rather than local playback. If streaming, lock-screen controls, notifications, or lyrics stop working, restore only the access or background setting the feature actually needs.
Background activity or autostart controls can reduce unwanted activity, but may also interrupt streaming, notifications, lyrics, or lock-screen controls. If songs disappear, check that permission still covers the music folder, the storage location or SD card is available, and the files were not moved or deleted. Battery restrictions can explain streaming failures after privacy changes.

Xiaomi says users can request access to, download, or delete Mi Music data through the Mi Account Privacy Center or Xiaomi Privacy Support. A request mechanism is not a guarantee that deletion is immediate or covers every backup, legally retained record, or third-party provider. Identify whether the data is tied to Mi Music, your Xiaomi Account, Xiaomi Cloud, or a content provider.
Deleting synchronized data can remove playlists, history, or files you expected to keep. Back up music files independently before changing cloud settings or requesting deletion. A factory reset can also erase local files; it is not a substitute for an account-level deletion request.

Is Mi Music safe for children or private listening?
The reviewed material does not verify robust parental controls, age filters, or child-specific privacy defaults. Do not assume an app is child-safe simply because it appears in Google Play. Review the content available in your region, purchases, comments, recommendations, online video and radio, and device permissions separately from local music playback. Avoid signing a child into an adult’s Xiaomi Account.
For private listening, using local files without an account, recommendations, microphone, location, or cloud sync is the more defensible setup. It is lower exposure, not zero collection: Xiaomi says analytic or technical data may still be processed, and regional behavior differs. Xiaomi’s Trust Center says that outside India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, local-playlist records are saved locally rather than synchronized online; that regional qualification matters, and enabling sync changes the picture.
Is Mi Music a good primary streaming service?
That is a service-quality question, not just a safety one. Mi Music may be convenient because it is integrated with Xiaomi phones and can combine local files with lyrics, recommendations, radio, or online content where available. Its limitations are regional variation, less consistent access to catalogs and features, potential account/cloud dependence, and the difficulty of treating a manufacturer’s app as a portable library across different platforms.
Do not assume a replacement is automatically more private. Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music each involve their own accounts, personalization, and data policies. Compare the service’s current privacy terms and features for your country. Spotify may suit listeners prioritizing discovery, sharing, and broad device support; Apple Music may suit those who want access across Apple and non-Apple devices; YouTube Music may suit people seeking music videos, remixes, and YouTube-associated material. A standalone local player such as VLC can replace local playback, but it is not a licensed streaming catalog. Availability, plan features, and prices change, so check official service pages before subscribing.

Bottom line: safe enough for what?
For the official app, malware is not the main concern supported by the available evidence; data minimization and transparency are. Mi Music is a reasonable local player for Xiaomi owners who accept Xiaomi’s disclosed practices and keep optional access and sync limited. It is a less compelling choice for someone who wants a privacy-minimal app, child-specific safeguards, or a stable, portable streaming library. If the app’s online features are not worth the account and data trade-offs, use it offline with restrictions or choose another player or streaming service after reviewing that service’s own policies.
