In Rohena Gera’s Mumbai-set drama Is Love Enough, Sir?, a widowed domestic worker and her employer grow close—but affection does not erase the class divide between them. The film makes that connection quietly affecting, while leaving a harder question in view: can love be enough when one person depends on the other for work and a place to live?
What is Is Love Enough, Sir? about?
Ratna (Tillotama Shome), a young widow from a village in Maharashtra, works as a live-in domestic helper for Ashwin (Vivek Gomber), a wealthy man in Mumbai. Their relationship begins within the boundaries of employment, then becomes more intimate. The imbalance that shapes it never disappears: Ashwin is Ratna’s employer, while she cooks and cleans in his home.

Ratna is not defined only by her feelings for Ashwin. She wants to pursue tailoring, and her friendship with fellow domestic worker Lakshmi (Geetanjali Kulkarni) gives her a connection beyond the household where she works. Those details give the story a more grounded center than a simple tale of a rich man rescuing a poor woman.
Does the romance work?
The film’s strongest case for the couple is made through its restrained performances and observational style. Shome gives Ratna a quiet resolve; Gomber plays Ashwin with sensitivity rather than grand romantic gestures. Their connection develops in small exchanges, making the emotional shifts feel intimate rather than melodramatic. NDTV likewise describes the film’s tone as understated and its screenplay as focused on the class divide.

But personal sensitivity is not the same as equality. Ratna’s work, housing and economic security are tied to Ashwin’s household, so the relationship carries consequences that a romance between social equals would not. Scroll critic Nandini Ramnath argues that the film keeps questions of propriety, workplace safety and unequal power at a distance. That critique gets to the tension at the heart of the film: its quietness can make the relationship tender, but can also soften the conditions under which it develops.
Is it a fairy tale?
The fairy-tale reading fits the possibility that a connection might cross a rigid social boundary. It fits less well if it suggests that love alone resolves the material risks. Ratna’s tailoring ambition and her friendship with Lakshmi matter because they preserve a life and set of desires outside the romance. The film offers those elements, yet its treatment of the couple’s future leaves the larger imbalance less examined than the feelings between them.

At one point, Ratna warns Ashwin, “People will make fun of us.” He answers, “I don’t care,” as reported in the Alliance of Women Film Journalists review. His indifference to gossip does not necessarily answer what the relationship costs Ratna: public judgment and economic dependence do not fall on both of them in the same way.
Performances, style and context
Shome anchors the drama with a performance that makes Ratna’s practical judgment and private longing legible without spelling everything out. Kulkarni’s Lakshmi adds warmth and solidarity, while the film’s unhurried, observational approach gives everyday work and domestic space room to register. Ratna and Ashwin communicate in Hindi despite having different first languages, another small reminder that closeness takes shape across differences the film does not simply erase.

Verdict
Is Love Enough, Sir? is most compelling as a restrained, performance-led romance that lets its class divide remain visible. Ratna’s ambitions and friendship give her a life beyond Ashwin, but the story does not fully confront the workplace and economic power that shape their intimacy. The result is affecting, if more comfortable with the possibility of love than with the unequal conditions it must overcome.
